England Faces Late Squad Changes for Nations League

England have been forced into a late reshuffle, with five players withdrawing from Thomas Tuchel’s squad ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures.

Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice and Tino Livramento have all pulled out, prompting call-ups for James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White.

Five out, two in

Palmer’s return to the England fold had been one of the big talking points after his controversial omission from the World Cup squad. Instead of using the window to re-establish himself on the international stage, the Chelsea forward is out again, this time with what has been described as a minor injury.

At Manchester United, the damage came late. Mainoo and Rashford were both taken off in the closing stages of Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Fulham and were assessed by club staff before being ruled out of national-team duty.

Rice, ever-present and influential for Arsenal, completed 90 minutes in their 3-0 defeat by Brighton but will not report for England. Livramento joins him on the absentee list, the Newcastle defender having been restricted to just three substitute appearances this season.

That flurry of withdrawals has opened the door for two midfielders who have been on Tuchel’s radar for some time.

Garner and Gibbs-White get their chance

Everton’s James Garner and Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White will link up with the squad on Tuesday.

Tuchel had already hinted this was coming. On Friday he admitted that 26-year-old Gibbs-White, who has six caps, was close to making the original list. The Forest playmaker now gets his opportunity, called in as England’s attacking options are thinned.

Garner’s path is slightly different but no less intriguing. Both of his senior England appearances came in March, yet he found himself on the outside when the 2026 World Cup squad was named. Now, with Rice absent and Mainoo sidelined, the Everton midfielder is back in the frame, rewarded for his club form and handed another chance to convince.

England’s Nations League campaign will not be defined by this week alone, but Tuchel’s plans have already been tested. How quickly this reshaped squad settles could tell plenty about where his England project is really heading.
