Djed Spence's Future: Inter Milan Close to Signing

Djed Spence’s future is edging towards Italy, and one former coach believes any Premier League rival – including Liverpool – should be paying top-tier money if they want to change that.

“Now he would be a player of interest. If it’d be Liverpool then I’d want big money for him. I would want a lot of money for him,” the coach said, before adding a pointed comparison. “They took the boy Joe Gomez, who was a South London boy, but Spence is a better player than him.”

That kind of praise underlines why Tottenham have been holding firm on their valuation. But the direction of travel is clear: Spence wants Inter Milan.

A switch across north London to Arsenal has been floated on the rumour mill, yet nothing concrete has emerged. Arsenal have not moved for a right-back or any wide defensive cover this summer, and there is no indication they are about to change course for Spence.

Instead, the serious movement is on the continent. Inter Milan have opened direct talks with Tottenham over a permanent deal, with the player keen to make the move to Serie A. Earlier in the window, the two clubs were some distance apart on price. Spurs were understood to be pushing for a higher fee, reflecting both Spence’s age and potential.

The gap now appears to be closing. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter are closing in on an agreement worth around €30million (£25m) plus bonuses. That figure sits below what Tottenham were initially thought to be demanding, but Spence’s desire to join the Italian giants is believed to be softening their stance.

The pressure of the player’s preference is starting to tell.

North London switch still a long shot

Could anything derail Inter’s move? At this stage, it would take a significant twist. Any club attempting to hijack the deal would need to match Tottenham’s expectations and, just as importantly, convince Spence to abandon his chosen path.

Arsenal making that play would be the biggest shock of all. For now, a transfer anywhere other than Inter looks remote. Unless valuations shift dramatically or a new suitor steps in with a compelling offer, Spence’s next chapter is poised to be written in Milan, not in another corner of north London.
