The Portuguese icon has revealed he plans to retire at the end of the 2026/27 season, telling Vogue that his drive is to leave a “spectacular legacy” as he prepares for life after football and a wedding to long-time partner Georgina Rodriguez.

He will be 41 by then. He does not intend to drift quietly away.

Ronaldo has fixed his eyes on one last, almost absurd milestone: 1,000 career goals.

Right now, he sits on 976 strikes across club and country, according to BBC Sport. The numbers still move. Match the 28 goals he delivered in the 2025/26 Saudi Pro League campaign, and he will crash through four figures before he finally hangs up those boots that have defined an era.

Of those 976 goals, 103 came in the Premier League, across his two spells at Manchester United between 2003 and 2009, and again from 2021 to 2022. That haul makes him United’s fourth-highest Premier League scorer, behind Wayne Rooney (183), Ryan Giggs (109) and Paul Scholes (107), and ahead of Ruud van Nistelrooy (95).

His first stint at Old Trafford rewrote the club’s modern history: three Premier League titles, two EFL Cups, one Champions League, one FA Cup. If he reaches 1,000 goals before he walks away, it would be a finish worthy of one of the league’s greatest ever forwards, and a final statistic as outrageous as the career that produced it.

Lille boss Davide Ancelotti has admitted that the chase for Bouaddi is very real.

Alisson impressed as Liverpool’s new defenders stake early claim

At Liverpool, the focus is on the back line and two new faces who have already caught the eye of the man they must protect.

Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo both featured in Sunday’s 2-0 pre-season win over Como, giving fans a first look at the revamped defensive options. “That's what we want, that's the mentality of Liverpool players. Playing alongside Virgil (van Dijk) I think is a great thing for them as well."
