Cole Palmer Enjoys Ibiza Getaway After World Cup Snub
Cole Palmer has traded the glare of England’s World Cup debate for the sun-soaked chaos of Ibiza, spotted enjoying a night out at Ocean Beach after his surprise omission from Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
The Chelsea forward, 24, was seen on Wednesday night at the celebrity hotspot, drinking and joking with a group of friends during a lads’ trip, days after learning he would not be heading to the tournament in America. Among those in his wider group was Love Island star Megan Moore, who joined Palmer and his pals at the busy beach club.
Palmer, who has been in a relationship with influencer Olivia Holder for almost a year, appeared determined to park the disappointment for at least one evening. Onlookers described him as the centre of attention, chatting with friends as a stream of partygoers gravitated towards his table.
“Cole was the life and soul of the party,” one eyewitness said. “He was with his mates but women were flocking all around him. Megan and Cole were laughing and joking together – her cousin does his social media so they’re old mates. He looked as though he was in need of a good night out after the football news though and he was obviously enjoying the freedom of having some time off. The amount of booze they were putting back, the hangovers they’ll have today will be rotten.”
Palmer and his group arrived late in the afternoon and stayed into the night, with the Chelsea man and Moore among those seen leaving at around 11pm.
The trip follows what insiders have described as a heavy emotional blow for the forward, whose omission has been one of the most hotly debated calls in Tuchel’s England selection. A source close to the player said the decision hit him “hard”, grouping his reaction with that of other high-profile absentees such as Harry Maguire and Phil Foden.
“Not making the squad hit Cole hard, like all the other players including Harry Maguire and Phil Foden,” the source said. “It was a tough pill to swallow. Naturally these lads live for football and to represent their team at the World Cup is what they all want to do. Cole almost immediately took himself away for a break with Olivia to get into the right frame of mind. He’ll enjoy a break before he gets back to training.”
Palmer’s name dominated discussion in the hours after Tuchel’s announcement. His form and ability to produce game-changing moments had many supporters convinced he would be on the plane, and even his boyhood idol Wayne Rooney admitted he was surprised to see the Chelsea attacker left out.
He is not alone in seeking distance from the storm. Foden has chosen a quieter reset, spending his summer break so far with long-term partner Rebecca Cooke and their children. Maguire, meanwhile, is preparing for a very different World Cup role.
The Manchester United defender is expected to appear as a pundit on “The Rest is Football” when the tournament begins later this month. The Athletic reported that the hugely popular podcast, fronted by Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, will be turned into a daily television series on Netflix for the duration of the competition, with Maguire among several special guests lined up to feature.
For Palmer, there will be no such spotlight in America. His stage, for now, is a crowded Ibiza poolside, a brief escape before the questions return: how does a player of his talent turn this snub into fuel for the season that follows?
