Camara's Rise: Chelsea and Liverpool Eye Midfielder After Transfer Drama

Chelsea thought they had their Enzo Fernández replacement nailed down. Fee agreed, profile identified, the clock ticking towards the end of the summer window. In their sights: Monaco’s 22-year-old midfield engine, the Senegal international Camara, lined up for around £47 million.

Then, at the death, Monaco walked away.

Xabi Alonso had been expecting his new signing. Chelsea had been preparing for his arrival. Instead, the deal collapsed at the last minute, leaving the west London club light in midfield and Camara still in the principality, his Premier League move suddenly gone.

If there was any doubt about how he would respond, it vanished quickly.

Camara has since nailed down a starting spot in Monaco’s XI. He has not missed a minute of their Europa Conference League campaign so far, scoring in a 3-2 win over Gornik Zabrze, and has featured in all five Ligue 1 fixtures as Monaco have surged to the top of the table. The aborted transfer has not unsettled him; it seems to have sharpened him.

Those closest to him can see it. After a recent win over Lens, his midfield partner Denis Zakaria admitted he did his best to keep Camara exactly where he is.

“Chelsea? I told him that it was good but that it is better here,” Zakaria told reporters, drawing on his own bruising experience during a difficult loan spell at Stamford Bridge. The Swiss international, who struggled to make an impact in London, felt obliged to offer a warning and a bit of guidance.

“I know the player and the person that he is; he is very professional. I think that [the transfer saga] has given him even more strength. He was incredible today.”

Camara, for his part, has refused to indulge in any self-pity. Speaking before a recent draw with Strasbourg, he made it clear he has mentally moved on from the drama of deadline day.

“There was a possibility I could leave,” he said. “It didn't go through at the last minute and that's part of football. I've turned the page and am focusing on the season. I can help the team a lot. Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I'm staying focused on the season with Monaco.”

That calm will be tested again soon.

Chelsea have not given up. With Enzo Fernández gone and a glaring gap in the heart of midfield, the club still view Camara as a priority and are preparing a renewed push when the market reopens in January. Transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio has confirmed their interest remains alive.

“Will Chelsea renew their interest in Camara? I think so because everything changed for Camara at the last minute,” Di Marzio explained. “Chelsea needs a player in that position after Enzo left, so I think that in January, they will try again. Obviously, it’s difficult to say right now if something will be arranged or not. Chelsea will be coming back again.”

This time, though, Chelsea will not be alone at the table.

Liverpool have entered the picture, monitoring Camara as they weigh up the contract situation of Alexis Mac Allister and look at ways to reinforce their own midfield before next summer. Di Marzio says the Merseyside club are keeping a close eye on the Monaco man’s availability, aware that his profile and form make him an increasingly attractive option.

For Monaco, that means bracing for impact.

Top of Ligue 1 and riding a wave of early-season confidence, the French side know every dominant Camara performance only drives his value higher. Premier League heavyweights are circling, budgets are being drawn up, and January is already looming large on the horizon.

Chelsea want to complete Alonso’s rebuild and finally plug the Enzo-sized hole in their midfield. Liverpool are looking to protect themselves against future contract flashpoints and keep their engine room evolving.

In the middle of it all stands Camara: 22, in form, and suddenly one of the most coveted midfielders on the winter market. His task is deceptively simple and brutally difficult at the same time.
