Burnley Sign Defender Alleyne from Manchester City

Burnley have moved to bolster their promotion push with the signing of 21-year-old defender Alleyne from Manchester City, handing the England Under-21 international a fresh stage after a breakthrough year.

The young defender split last season in two very different worlds. For the first half of the 2025-26 campaign he was in the Championship with Watford, learning the grind of weekly second-tier football. Then an injury crisis at City dragged him back into Pep Guardiola’s squad and straight into high-pressure knockout ties.

Guardiola trusted him in big moments. Alleyne made seven appearances for City last season, including both legs of the EFL Cup semi-final against Newcastle United and a Champions League outing against Bodo/Glimt. Not bad for a player still feeling his way into senior football.

His stint at Watford told another story: one of consistency and edge. In league matches, he produced the second-most tackles (20) of any defender at the club, won the third-most duels (72) and registered the fourth-most clearances (76). Numbers that point to a defender who doesn’t hide, who steps into challenges and does the ugly work without fuss.

Now he drops back into the Championship with a different mission. Burnley, relegated from the Premier League last term, are rebuilding with one clear aim: get back up. Alleyne arrives to be part of that response, to add energy and bite to a back line that must withstand the long haul of a promotion chase.

"I'm super excited, I can't wait to get going," he told the club’s website after completing the move. "I had my first training session today and I've really enjoyed it so far, meeting the manager and my teammates.

"I first heard of the interest a couple of months ago now and I'm so glad it got done. It's a huge team, a Premier League team to be honest and I'm so buzzing to be here."

Burnley see themselves as a top-flight club temporarily out of place. Alleyne clearly does too. The question now is whether his sharp rise from Watford loanee to City cup defender can continue by driving a fallen Premier League side straight back where it believes it belongs.
