Bruno Guimaraes Set for First Arsenal Start Against Manchester City

Bruno Guimaraes is set for his first Arsenal start – and it could come on a huge stage against Manchester City in the Community Shield.

The Brazilian midfielder, eased in with a substitute appearance against Como in midweek, is now pushing to go straight into Mikel Arteta’s XI in Cardiff. One cameo, and suddenly the stakes jump from pre-season tune-up to statement fixture.

Big guns back for Arsenal

Arsenal’s squad will look very different from the one that has carried most of the summer minutes.

Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi are all in line to return to the matchday group after missing the entire pre-season schedule. None of them has played a single minute since the World Cup, having only just rejoined full training at the start of the week following an extended break.

Their workload has ramped up at London Colney over the past few days and Arteta made it clear they are ready to be involved.

“They will be available,” he said at his pre-match press conference. “They trained with us today, they will train tomorrow. If they are in the condition we expect them to be, they will be involved.”

Available, though, does not mean overused. Arsenal are expected to manage their minutes carefully, which opens the door for Guimaraes to anchor the side from the start.

Guimaraes to lead a new-look midfield

With the club cautious over Saka, Rice and Zubimendi, Guimaraes is well placed to start alongside Myles Lewis-Skelly. The academy midfielder has been one of the constants of Arsenal’s summer, starting every pre-season match and earning trust through sheer volume of work and composure.

That potential pairing offers a glimpse of Arsenal’s evolving midfield – Guimaraes’ control and experience meshing with Lewis-Skelly’s energy and range. For a so-called curtain-raiser, it feels more like a live rehearsal for the season ahead.

Defensive reshuffle continues

At the back, Arteta still has to juggle.

Jurrien Timber and William Saliba remain unavailable, so Ben White and Cristhian Mosquera are expected to start on the right side of the defence. David Raya should continue in goal, with Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori completing the back four.

It is not the back line Arteta would ideally choose for a meeting with City, but it is one he has been forced to lean on through the summer. The question now is whether it can withstand a sharper, more ruthless level of opposition.

Tzolis makes his case

Further forward, one of the stories of Arsenal’s pre-season has been Christos Tzolis.

The winger has been among the standout performers in the warm-up games and is pushing hard for a start on the left. He is up against Gabriel Martinelli for that spot, with the Brazilian still the subject of links to a move to Turkey.

Form versus status. Momentum versus seniority. Arteta’s call on the left flank will say plenty about how he views Tzolis’ readiness for the big stage.

Martin Odegaard is set to pull the strings in the No10 role, with academy talent Ethan Nwaneri Dowman (listed as Dowman) likely to complete the attacking midfield trio if Arteta sticks to his pre-season patterns.

Up front, Kai Havertz remains the trusted option. Arteta regularly turns to the German in Arsenal’s biggest games, and there is little to suggest he will change that approach now.
