Benfica Plans for Mourinho's Departure with Marco Silva

Benfica are bracing for the possibility of losing José Mourinho to Real Madrid – and have identified Fulham’s Marco Silva as the man to step in if the 63-year-old is lured back to the Bernabéu.

Madrid have made Mourinho their preferred choice and have already held talks over a dramatic return for the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager, 13 years after his first spell in the Spanish capital came to an end. The pull is obvious: a giant in transition, searching for a figure who knows both the club and the demands of the job.

Benfica, though, do not intend to let him walk without a fight. Mourinho only took charge in September and has quickly reasserted his presence in Lisbon, but the Portuguese champions know they cannot afford to be caught cold. Behind the scenes, they have turned to a familiar name in their homeland.

Silva, 48, has emerged as the leading candidate should Mourinho depart. His work at Fulham has not gone unnoticed. He dragged the club out of the Championship and into the Premier League in 2022, then kept them there with a clear identity and a competitive edge, even if a sustained push for European places has remained just out of reach.

Fulham want him to stay. A new contract is on the table, but Silva has yet to commit and is weighing whether this is the right moment to seek a new challenge. Benfica, currently second to Porto in Portugal, can offer something Fulham cannot: regular shots at domestic titles and the platform of the Champions League. For a coach who has rebuilt his reputation in England, the prospect of leading one of Portugal’s giants in Europe is a powerful temptation.

Chelsea circle as Silva weighs options

Silva’s situation is complicated by interest from Chelsea, who also have him on their shortlist as they search for a successor to Liam Rosenior, sacked last month. The London club are prepared to let the season run its course before making a final decision, but Silva’s name sits prominently among their options.

He is not the only one. Inside Stamford Bridge, Xabi Alonso is regarded as the ideal candidate. The Spaniard, who guided Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2024, has been out of work since his dismissal by Madrid this season, yet his stock remains high across Europe. Chelsea have tracked him for at least three years and view him as a coach capable of reshaping a project, not just managing a squad.

Alonso is thought to favour a move to England for his next job, a preference that keeps Chelsea firmly in the conversation and places him on the radar of other Premier League heavyweights. Liverpool have already been mentioned as a possible destination if they eventually decide to part company with Arne Slot.

So the managerial carousel begins to creak into motion. If Madrid prise Mourinho away, Benfica will move for Silva. If Silva hesitates, Chelsea wait in the wings. And if Alonso chooses England, another elite dugout will change hands. The decisions made in the coming weeks will not just define benches; they will shape the balance of power across Europe’s touchlines.
