Bayern Munich Stalls on Read as Manchester City Eyes Feyenoord Starlet

Bayern Munich’s pursuit of Feyenoord right-back Read has hit the brakes. Not because of doubts over his talent, but because of the number on the invoice.

Talks between the player’s camp and the German record champions have stalled, according to Sky. The sticking point is familiar in modern football: the transfer fee. Feyenoord are said to be holding firm at around 30 million euros, a bold demand for a teenager still piecing together a consistent body of work at elite level.

Bayern like what they see. They also see the medical file.

Read has been battling a persistent thigh problem that has kept him out since late November, save for a brief substitute appearance against Alkmaar. For a club that has grown wary of long-term injury risks, committing that kind of money to a 19-year-old with recent fitness issues is a major call. The hesitation is understandable.

On the pitch, though, he has already made a strong case. Across 53 Eredivisie appearances, Read has produced 16 goal contributions—five goals and eleven assists—numbers that underline his influence in the final third rather than just his defensive duties. He has tasted both Champions League and Europa League football, and he plays like a full-back built for the modern game: aggressive going forward, comfortable on the ball, and happy to live high up the pitch.

That profile fits a clear need in Munich. Bayern still lack a long-term, attack-minded solution on the right side of their defence. Read ticks that box. He also ticks another: scarcity. There are not many teenage full-backs with that kind of experience and upside.

But just as Bayern’s interest cooled, another heavyweight stepped into the frame.

Reports from Bild and Sky Sports say Manchester City have now entered the race. The Premier League champions are closely monitoring the 19-year-old as the season winds down and are weighing up a move. If City decide to go hard, the entire dynamic changes.

The pressure on the price would spike. Feyenoord hold the strongest card of all: time. Read is under contract in Rotterdam until 2029, which gives the Dutch club little reason to compromise. A bidding war between Bayern and City, even a hint of one, only strengthens their hand.

Liverpool had been linked earlier and explored the possibility in the winter window, but chose not to act. Their silence now leaves the stage to Bayern and City.

So the question hangs over this transfer: do Bayern push past their financial comfort zone for a player who fits them perfectly but carries risk, or does the door open for Manchester City to move in and pay the premium for the next elite attacking full-back?
