Bayern Munich Cool Talk on Florian Wirtz Move

Bayern Munich have cooled talk of a dramatic move for Florian Wirtz – for now – but the Liverpool playmaker’s name is not disappearing from their long-term conversations.

The German champions pushed hard for Wirtz before his £116m switch from Bayer Leverkusen to Anfield in the summer of 2025, battling Liverpool and Manchester City for one of Europe’s most coveted attacking talents. Arne Slot won that race, convincing the Germany international in face-to-face meetings in Munich and Liverpool to choose Merseyside.

Since then, reality has bitten.

Wirtz arrived with a superstar price tag and a highlight reel to match, yet his adaptation to the Premier League has been bumpy. The 22-year-old has struggled with the physical intensity of English football and has not consistently hit the heights that made him a sensation in the Bundesliga. That dip has inevitably triggered whispers: if Liverpool ever lose patience, would Bayern come back?

Right now, the answer from Germany is no.

Bayern brief: no ‘shock move’ in the works

German reporter Christian Falk has poured cold water on claims that Bayern are actively plotting a surprise raid for Wirtz.

“It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich are tracking Florian Wirtz and could make a shock move for the Liverpool player. My information is that this is not true,” Falk told CF Bayern Insider.

He underlined the long-running connection between club and player – including those two secret meetings before Wirtz chose Liverpool – but insisted that history alone is fuelling the latest round of speculation.

“If there is such a connection, you’re always going to have rumours – even more so when there are concerns over his performance levels in England,” he said.

Falk does not share the harshest assessments of Wirtz’s form. He believes the midfielder is actually playing better than last season and adjusting to a new role under Slot. The wider picture at Bayern also matters: Jamal Musiala is still working his way back to top form after illness and last year’s injury problems, and Vincent Kompany is reshaping the attack with Michael Olise as a central figure.

Against that backdrop, Falk’s message is clear: “There is nothing planned” between Bayern and Wirtz at this stage.

Swap talk: Wirtz and Olise on the same chessboard

The story doesn’t end there. It just changes shape.

While Bayern are not currently working on a deal for Wirtz, Falk stopped short of dismissing the idea of a future swap involving Michael Olise. The former Crystal Palace winger, now operating centrally for both Bayern and France, is being positioned as a key piece in Kompany’s system.

“Bayern have a big squad and everyone’s feeling really confident. Musiala has a long contract and don’t forget that Vincent Kompany is trying a new system with Michael Olise as the fulcrum in the centre – the same position he currently plays in for the French national team. So, FC Bayern have a lot of options. Don’t forget, either, that it was a lot of money Liverpool paid for Wirtz,” Falk pointed out.

That fee looms over any future negotiation. Liverpool’s £116m outlay means they will not entertain cut-price solutions. Any serious move from Bayern would require either a major sale or a creative structure.

That is where Olise enters the equation.

“Everyone is hoping the former Crystal Palace star signs a new contract, but if not, and he decides for a transfer, of course Florian Wirtz would be a player who’s interesting for Bayern Munich,” Falk said.

He outlined the logic: Wirtz can play wide or centrally, fits Bayern’s technical profile and would be a natural target if Olise leaves – either in a direct swap with Liverpool or after a big-money sale, potentially to Real Madrid.

“This would be a very interesting thing, and if you make a swap deal with Liverpool or sell Olise for a lot of money to Real Madrid, you have the money to make an offer for Wirtz,” Falk explained. At the same time, he stressed the number of moving parts: contracts, form, system, and the willingness of all three clubs.

“So, there are many, many positions which have to be discussed. I wouldn’t say it’s not true that Bayern Munich would have thought of that.”

For now, Bayern are not knocking on Liverpool’s door. But if Wirtz ever pushes for a Bundesliga return and Olise’s future in Munich starts to wobble, the pieces for one of the most intriguing swap deals in recent years are already on the board.
