Barcelona's Transfer News: Cancelo and Rodri Arrive, Striker Search Continues

Barcelona’s transfer window has erupted into life over the past 24 hours, with two heavyweight deals moving to the brink of completion – yet the club’s search for a new No. 9 remains stuck in neutral.

Joao Cancelo has agreed to terminate his contract with Al Hilal and is expected to fly to Barcelona next week to complete a free transfer to Barça. The Portuguese full-back, long admired at the club, is now just formalities away from pulling on the shirt.

The bigger shockwave comes in midfield. Barcelona have reached an agreement with Manchester City for the signing of Rodri, a move that would reshape Hansi Flick’s core and hand the team one of the most dominant holding midfielders in the game. With Cancelo and Rodri both incoming, the spine is hardening fast.

But the hole up front remains.

No call, no talks: Gyokeres still untouched

With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres gone, the hunt for a centre-forward has become the defining question of Barça’s final weeks in the window. Arsenal’s No. 9, Viktor Gyokeres, has been floated as a serious alternative after talks for Julian Alvarez stalled.

Right now, that idea is just that – an idea.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have not received a single phone call from Barcelona about the Swedish striker. No email, no meeting, no club-to-club contact of any kind. Deco has not opened negotiations, nor has he formally checked the conditions of a potential deal.

For any move, the numbers would be brutal. Arsenal have little reason to make Gyokeres available after just one season, and any serious approach from Barcelona would immediately fall into the “expensive operation” category. With Barça’s financial margin still tight, this is no minor detail.

Flick’s No. 9 problem

Inside the squad, the issue is obvious. Flick goes into the decisive phase of the window without an established senior centre-forward.

Hamza Abdelkarim is currently the most natural option through the middle. Flick can also improvise, pushing Lamine Yamal, Anthony Gordon or Karim Adeyemi into central roles if needed. None of those, though, are specialist long-term solutions in the mould of Lewandowski.

Julian Alvarez remains the forward Flick and Deco admire most. They see him as the ideal blend of work rate, movement and finishing. Atletico Madrid’s stance, however, has turned that admiration into frustration. The Spanish club are refusing to negotiate with Barcelona, making the deal extremely complicated.

That’s where Gyokeres re-enters the frame. If Barça choose to move, the Arsenal striker could quickly become a serious, concrete option rather than a name on a shortlist.

A domino waiting to fall

For now, Barcelona have not made that first move. But if they do, the market could start to shake.

Gyokeres endured a difficult first season in England and appears to sit behind Kai Havertz in Mikel Arteta’s pecking order for the coming campaign. That dynamic gives Arsenal some room to manoeuvre – if they can line up the right replacement.

Arsenal themselves have been linked with Julian Alvarez. Atletico Madrid, who have blocked Barça’s advances, might be more open to selling Alvarez to the Gunners than to a direct rival from La Liga.

If that door opens, another one swings with it. A sale of Alvarez could push Atletico towards Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen, a striker whose power, depth runs and penalty-box presence would fit their system.

All of this circles back to Barcelona. One decisive call from Deco on Gyokeres could set off a chain reaction from Catalonia to London to Madrid and Istanbul.

The midfield is about to be rebuilt. The full-back line is being reinforced. The question now is simple: who will finish the chances for Flick’s new Barça when the season starts?
