Barcelona Secures Rodri in €76.5 Million Transfer Deal

Barcelona have reached an agreement in principle with Manchester City to sign Rodri in a deal worth around €76.5 million, landing the Spain captain as the centrepiece of Hansi Flick’s evolving midfield.

The two clubs are now exchanging paperwork to complete the transfer, with only the final formalities standing between Rodri and a move that could reshape the European balance of power. The 30-year-old is expected in Barcelona in the coming days and could be unveiled before Wednesday’s Joan Gamper Trophy clash against Al Ahly at Spotify Camp Nou.

City resisted at first. Barcelona saw two bids knocked back before returning over the weekend with a third offer that finally hit the Premier League champions’ valuation. With just one year left on Rodri’s deal at the Etihad Stadium, City were ready to sell at the right price, and Barcelona pushed hard enough to meet it.

Real Madrid were in the race as well. They tracked the Spain midfielder and made their interest known, but once talks with Barcelona gathered pace, sources say Rodri’s preference was clear: he wanted Catalonia, not the capital.

Centrepiece of a frantic rebuild

Rodri does not arrive in isolation. He drops into a Barcelona dressing room in the middle of a sweeping rebuild, one that has already seen big moves and bold decisions.

Joao Cancelo is set to return as a free agent, rejoining a club where he impressed on loan. He and Rodri are expected to become the fourth and fifth signings of a busy summer, following the arrivals of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Jesse Bisiwu.

The plan changed when Frenkie de Jong suffered a long-term injury. That setback forced Barcelona deeper into the midfield market. Initially, Rodri was not at the top of the list, but his situation shifted after he capped a glittering international year by winning the World Cup with Spain. Once it became clear City would listen at a certain price, Barcelona moved decisively.

The squad, though, is still incomplete. Flick wants a striker. Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez has emerged as the leading target after the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, with Torres bound for Paris Saint-Germain. Recruitment has become a race against time and budget, but also an opportunity: bookmakers have already started to push Barcelona towards the front of the La Liga odds, expecting Flick’s champions to mount another serious title defence.

A serial winner for Flick’s engine room

Rodri’s journey to this point has been relentless. He came through Villarreal’s academy, sharpened his game at Atletico Madrid and then, in 2019, City activated his €70m release clause to make him their record signing at the time.

In Manchester, he turned into the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola’s side. Four Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and an EFL Cup followed, with Rodri anchoring a team that dominated English football and conquered Europe.

His path has not been without setbacks. A serious knee injury ruled him out for much of the 2024-25 season, and a hamstring problem disrupted the following campaign. When he finally returned to full fitness, he did not ease back in – he exploded.

This summer he lifted the World Cup with Spain and was named player of the tournament, having already collected the same honour at the European Championship. That Euros triumph helped propel him to the Ballon d’Or in 2024, cementing his status as the outstanding midfielder of his generation.

Now he heads to Camp Nou with the weight of expectation squarely on his shoulders. Inside Barcelona, Rodri is viewed as a statement signing, the kind that does more than fill a gap. The club believe he can elevate a side that has already won back-to-back La Liga titles under Flick.

If they are right, this is not just another big-name arrival. It is the pivot around which Barcelona’s next era might turn.
