Barcelona's Pursuit of Julian Alvarez: The Next Step
Barcelona believe they know how this story ends.

The La Liga champions are convinced they remain in pole position to land the Argentine forward, even as some of Europe’s heaviest hitters circle and his value climbs with every touch at the World Cup, where he is set to start a semi-final against Thomas Tuchel’s England.
Barca’s No. 1 after Lewandowski
Robert Lewandowski’s move to Chicago Fire has ripped a hole straight through the middle of Barcelona’s attack. Inside the club, there is no debate about the preferred replacement: Alvarez is the first choice to lead the line at Camp Nou next season.
Barcelona have already tested Atletico Madrid’s resolve with an offer of around £85m earlier in the summer. Atletico did not respond. No counter, no public stance, just silence from the Spanish capital.
Yet in Catalonia, there is no sense of surrender. Quite the opposite.
A few weeks ago, during Argentina’s time in the United States, Alvarez made it clear he wanted out of Madrid and urged Atletico to negotiate his departure. At Barcelona, that message landed like a green light. The belief is simple: he is pushing for Barcelona and Barcelona only.
Arsenal and PSG wait in the shadows
This is not a one-horse race. Arsenal, the Premier League champions, are tracking every development. Paris Saint-Germain, the current Champions League holders, are doing the same.
In Argentina, Clarin reports that Mikel Arteta’s staff are “following every movement” and are ready to step in if Barcelona stumble. They see an opportunity. They also know they are not leading it.
Crucially, Alvarez has so far refused to negotiate with any club other than Barcelona. Inside the Camp Nou offices, that stance fuels the confidence. It is the kind of leverage sporting directors dream of when they go into a high-stakes negotiation.
Barcelona also know the numbers. Neither Arsenal nor PSG have gone beyond the £85m they have already put on the table. The understanding is that Arsenal’s proposal falls short of that figure, while PSG would only hit that valuation if players are added into a package deal rather than a straight cash offer.
New offer, same deadline
In Spain, reports suggest Barcelona are preparing a fresh proposal to send to Atletico at the end of July. The fixed fee is expected to sit close to the original £85m, but this time the offer will be loaded with variables and bonuses designed to sweeten the deal and push the total value higher.
The club’s sporting directors are fully aware that, to this point, no rival has outbid them. That gives them a platform, not a guarantee.
To close the gap, Hansi Flick’s side may have to include a player heading in the opposite direction. President Joan Laporta is set to front the negotiations, a familiar face in high-wire transfer dealings and a man who understands both the financial strain and the political weight of this chase.
Barcelona are working within a tight calendar. Flick wants his squad settled before the league campaign begins on August 23. Any new first-team signing, especially a starting centre-forward, must be integrated before a ball is kicked in La Liga. The upgraded offer will not sit on Atletico’s desk forever.
If Atletico refuse to engage, Barcelona are ready to pivot. Sources close to the club have admitted to Spanish outlet AS that work is already under way on an alternative forward. The identity of that player remains under wraps, but the profile is clear: another elite attacker at the top end of the international game.
Alvarez’s focus — and the risk of waiting
For now, Alvarez is shutting it all out. His camp insist he is fully focused on the World Cup and will not make a final decision on his club future until Argentina’s tournament is over.
That stance stretches the timeline and carries risk for everyone involved. The saga could easily run into August, and Barcelona know they cannot let it drift deep into the month with their main striker slot still unfilled. There is optimism in Catalonia, but also a clear line in the sand: this cannot drag on much beyond the start of August.
So the picture is set.
Barcelona have the highest offer on record. Alvarez wants Barcelona. Atletico hold the contract and the power to stall. Arsenal and PSG lurk, waiting for the first crack in Barca’s confidence.
If Camp Nou is to be Julian Alvarez’s next stage, someone will have to blink.
