Barcelona Pursues Lukeba in Centre-Back Search

Barcelona’s hunt for a new centre-back has dragged through the summer with more rumours than real movement. That may finally be changing.

According to SPORT, the club have now opened talks with RB Leipzig over Castello Lukeba, a defender who has quietly climbed to the top of the shortlist inside the sporting department.

Deco and Flick push for a left-footed solution

The profile is clear. Barcelona want a left-footed centre-back, and Lukeba fits that need perfectly.

Deco and Hansi Flick are both strong admirers of the 21-year-old, who is widely regarded as one of the most promising young centre-backs in Europe. He has been on their internal wishlist for a long time, not just a name thrown in late in the window.

Barça have contacted Leipzig to ask about his situation and the fee required. Lukeba’s current market value sits at around €30 million, but the Catalans are trying to understand what the German club would really demand in a transfer.

The player himself is not short of options. He already has several Premier League clubs on his trail and could easily stay in the Bundesliga. Even so, the chance to join Barcelona is said to appeal to him, and he is open to making the jump.

Araujo gone, Kounde in the spotlight

The urgency is obvious. Ronald Araujo has already left for Liverpool, ripping a hole in the heart of Barcelona’s defence and leaving the back line more exposed than it has been in years.

That exit has pushed the centre-back position right to the top of the club’s priorities. Yet the next big decision will revolve around Jules Kounde.

Kounde has offers on the table and a departure cannot be ruled out. His future will heavily shape how far Barcelona go for Lukeba. If the Frenchman leaves, the club are expected to commit to a higher-level, higher-cost signing to rebuild the defence.

If he stays, the room for manoeuvre – financially and structurally – changes.

Flick vetoes, shortlist narrows

Several names have been floated around Barça in recent weeks: Aymeric Laporte, Alessandro Bastoni, Lukeba himself and even Cristian Romero. None of those tracks has truly taken off so far.

Inside the club, though, some options have already hit a wall. Flick is clearly unconvinced by certain profiles, including Bastoni and Romero, which narrows the field.

That leaves Lukeba as one of the most realistic and attractive routes, alongside Laporte. Young, left-footed, with resale value and room to grow under Flick’s guidance.

Barcelona have made the first call. Now the next one – on Kounde’s future – will decide just how hard they push for Leipzig’s rising star.
