Barcelona Weigh Laporte Move After Araujo Exit

Barcelona are heading into a decisive stretch of the summer window, and the dominoes are starting to fall at the back.

Ronald Araujo’s loan move to Liverpool has ripped open a gap in the centre of defence. Inside the club, the idea is clear: that slot should now go to a left-footed centre-back. The recruitment team already had one eye on that market; Araujo’s departure has turned it into a priority.

Rodri of Manchester City remains a major midfield target, while the search for a striker continues with Julian Alvarez now viewed as highly unlikely. But in the background, the centre-back debate has quietly moved to the foreground.

Laporte back in the frame

RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba has reappeared on Barcelona’s radar after earlier links this window. He is not alone.

According to SPORT, Aymeric Laporte has also been offered to the club and is under serious consideration. The Athletic Club defender, a World Cup winner and seasoned at the highest level, ticks many of the boxes Barça have been discussing for months.

Laporte is experienced. He is left-footed. He is comfortable building from the back. On paper, it is a simple fit.

His camp are understood to have presented Barcelona with a fixed figure tied to his release clause, and the player is open to leaving Athletic this summer. The path, at least financially, looks relatively clear.

And yet, Barcelona are hitting the brakes.

Once bitten by Athletic, Barcelona tread carefully

Inside the offices, one word dominates any conversation involving Athletic Club: caution.

The fallout from the Nico Williams saga last summer strained relations between the two clubs. That tension has not disappeared. It lingers over every potential negotiation, especially one as sensitive as triggering a clause or moving close to it.

Barcelona do not want another contractual mess. Not with Athletic. Not with release clauses. Not this summer.

So Laporte will only be an option if every legal and contractual detail is watertight from the very start. No grey areas. No hidden conditions. No room for interpretation.

Before taking a single formal step, Barça want absolute clarity on three things: the exact terms of Laporte’s contract, the precise mechanism of any release-related clause, and Athletic’s stance on the operation. Without that, the file does not move.

The message from the club is simple: any deal involving Laporte has to be completely clean and straightforward, or it does not happen.

Sporting fit takes a back seat to legal certainty

From a purely footballing point of view, the argument for Laporte is easy to make.

He brings La Liga experience, composure in possession, and the ability to anchor the left side of defence. Those are qualities Barcelona have long identified as an area to strengthen, especially after reshaping their back line in recent seasons.

There is also his understanding with Pau Cubarsi, with whom he forged an excellent partnership at the World Cup. The idea of replicating that chemistry at club level is naturally appealing to Barça’s sporting department.

Under normal circumstances, that profile would push Laporte close to the front of the queue.

But these are not normal circumstances between Barcelona and Athletic. Right now, the legal and political landscape is dictating the pace, not the tactical board.

If Barcelona ultimately decide to bring in a new central defender before the window closes, Laporte will be firmly in the conversation. At 32, with his release clause reportedly within reach, he represents a realistic, ready-made solution.
