Arthur and Juventus Set for Contract Termination

Arthur and Juventus are preparing to cut the cord.

After six uneven years tied together on paper, the Bianconeri are now working to rip up the Brazilian’s contract rather than send him on yet another loan. His deal at the Allianz Stadium runs until June 2027, but both club and player are pushing towards a mutual termination to clear the way for a clean break.

Sky Sport Italia report that talks are underway to find an agreement that would allow Arthur to leave before the natural expiry of his contract. For Juventus, it fits a clear strategy: move on high earners who are not part of the coach’s long-term plans. For Arthur, it would finally close a chapter that never really caught fire in Turin.

A blockbuster deal that never delivered

Arthur’s arrival in 2020 was one of the most debated transfers of recent Serie A seasons. On paper, it was huge. He joined from Barcelona for around €80 million, while Miralem Pjanic went the other way to Catalonia for €60 million in a complex swap that helped both clubs’ balance sheets.

On the pitch, the numbers told a very different story.

In his first Serie A campaign, Arthur made just 22 league appearances. The following season, he managed 20. There were flashes, but never a sustained run that justified the scale and noise of the deal. The move that was supposed to anchor Juve’s midfield instead drifted into the background.

A career on the move

Once he slipped out of favour in Turin, the loans started to stack up. Liverpool. Fiorentina. Girona. Then back home to Brazil with Gremio. Arthur’s career became a tour of temporary addresses, each spell offering a chance to reset, none of them turning into a permanent solution.

Gremio came closest. Back in familiar surroundings, he finally found rhythm and regular minutes, producing his most convincing run of form in years. It looked like the reboot he needed. But the Brazilian club could not meet Juventus’ valuation, and the deal stopped there. Financial reality pulled him back to Continassa, where his prospects were no clearer than before.

Frozen out in pre-season

This summer removed any remaining doubt about his status. During pre-season, Arthur was left out of the squad for a friendly against Juventus’ Next Gen side. For a senior player on a long contract, that kind of omission sends a loud message: he is not part of the technical project.

At the same time, the market has offered no easy exit. Concrete loan proposals have not materialised, and his wages remain a stumbling block for interested clubs. With no viable buyers and no sporting role for him in Turin, a mutual termination now stands out as the most realistic path.

If the agreement is reached, one of the most curious transfers of recent Italian football will quietly end not with a farewell on the pitch, but with a signature in an office and a midfielder once valued at €80 million back on the market, searching again for a place where his career can finally settle.
