Arsenal are pushing hard to land Julian Alvarez – and are ready to sacrifice Viktor Gyokeres to do it.

With the summer window ticking towards its close, Mikel Arteta is still hunting the elite No.9 he believes can turn a title-winning side into a European powerhouse. Alvarez remains the name at the top of his list, even as Arsenal continue to be linked with Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen.

Gyokeres, signed only last summer from Sporting for £55 million and a 21-goal striker in all competitions last season, has not completely convinced the club hierarchy that he is the man to lead the line at the very highest level. Arsenal want an upgrade. The Champions League demands it. So does the defence of their Premier League crown.

Alvarez, though, has made no secret of his preferred destination. Barcelona is still his favoured next move. The problem for him is that Atletico Madrid do not want to strengthen a direct LaLiga rival, and Barcelona’s long-running financial issues make a £100m-plus deal difficult to execute.

That stand-off has cracked the door open for Arsenal.

Talks have already taken place in London, according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, and the negotiations appear to have moved into a more serious phase. Spanish outlet Diario Sport report that Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, have now put a formal swap proposal on the table.

The offer? Gyokeres plus around £68.5 million for Alvarez.

It would mean Arsenal cutting ties with the Sweden international after just one season, a ruthless move that underlines how determined they are to bring in a forward they see as a genuine game-changer. The report adds that Alvarez’s “head has turned” towards Emirates Stadium, with Atletico’s stance on selling to Barcelona nudging him towards north London.

Financially, there would be no real obstacle. Alvarez is expected to double his wages if an agreement is reached, and neither club is thought to be struggling with the numbers involved in the structure of the deal.

‘That little bit of magic up front’

On the pitch, Arsenal have already started the season with a statement. A 3-0 win over Coventry in their Premier League opener on Friday night showcased the depth and control Arteta has built across his squad.

For Gary Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, Alvarez is the piece that could turn that strong platform into something even more frightening.

“We think that Alvarez wants to go to Barcelona, but if Arsenal could get Alvarez somehow that is going to light this place up, because then you have a world class striker to go with all the other world class defenders and midfield players,” he said.

“They’d become not just Premier League title winners, but you’re then thinking that they can go that extra step and win the Champions League as well.

“He does need that little bit of magic up front that when you don’t play well they’ll go and win a big game for you.

“Has he got enough of that? I’m not sure.”

That final line hangs over the whole pursuit. Arsenal are convinced Alvarez can be that player. Some still need persuading.

For now, the champions press on. A high-profile swap on the table, a top target tempted, and a manager who believes he is one ruthless decision away from building a side that can dominate England and Europe.
