Arsenal in Talks to Sign Ezri Konsa for Title Defence

Arsenal are closing in on their next major piece of business, with the club in advanced talks with Aston Villa over a deal for Ezri Konsa.

The Gunners have tracked the 28-year-old all summer. Villa started by slapping a £60m price tag on one of their key defenders, a figure Arsenal initially refused to touch. Negotiations have dragged, but the London club have kept pushing, convinced Konsa fits exactly what Mikel Arteta wants from his back line.

Konsa still has two years left on his Villa contract, which has given the Midlands club a strong hand at the table. Arsenal, though, sense an opportunity to strike at a crucial moment in their squad build.

Konsa: Built for Arteta’s Back Line

Ask around Arsenal and one theme keeps coming back: duels. Arteta wants defenders who relish them, win them, and keep winning them when the pressure rises.

By that measure, Konsa is elite.

Last season, the England international won more ground duels than any other player in the Premier League. Not just edging it, but finishing well clear of names like Virgil van Dijk and Gabriel – the latter now poised to become his partner rather than his rival.

Arsenal’s need is obvious. William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are both sidelined, leaving holes at centre-back and right-back. Arteta wants someone who can move between those roles without the team losing rhythm or control. Konsa ticks both boxes.

Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White can cover those positions and impressed in the Community Shield win over Manchester City, but White’s injury record over the last two seasons has been a constant concern. The club cannot afford to be caught short again.

They already know what that looks like. Mosquera had to start the Champions League final at right-back against PSG, out of position on the biggest stage. The night turned on moments, and one of them was the young Spaniard conceding a penalty. Arsenal do not want to gamble like that again.

If Arsenal get Konsa over the line, they will have addressed a key structural issue in the squad. From an incomings perspective, it would leave them tantalisingly close to calling this window complete.

Then comes the next question: can they finally land the forward they have been chasing all summer?

Arteta’s Ambition: “The Best Club in the World”

Arteta’s transfer drive sits within a far bigger vision. Fresh from a Premier League title and a commanding 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City, he is not shying away from the scale of Arsenal’s ambition.

"It's certainly the ambition of the club and the owners to be the best club in the world," he told Sky Sports at the Premier League launch event ahead of Friday’s opener against Coventry.

To reach that level, he spelled out the checklist: the best facilities, the best stadium, the best supporters – and crucially, the best squad and the best players. Those, he said, are the ones who decide matches when it matters most.

That is the context in which a move for Konsa sits. Not just as cover. As part of a squad built to handle every competition, every injury, every tactical shift.

Arsenal enter the new season as clear favourites to retain their title. The label does not bother Arteta.

"This is part of our industry, and that's okay," he said. What matters to him is what he sees in the dressing room: “that fire, that desire and the will to be better every single day.”

History, though, is not on Arsenal’s side. They have not defended a top-flight crown since the 1930s. Arteta sees that not as a burden, but as a target.

"That's an opportunity that we have ahead, and we are very conscious of what it's going to take to deliver that," he said. He talked about ambition, desire, ability and conviction – all qualities he believes are already in this group.

Now the club moves to match those words with action in the market. If Konsa walks through the doors at London Colney in the coming days, Arsenal will be one step closer to the kind of squad a champion needs.

The title defence starts on Friday night. The question is whether Konsa will be part of it.
