Arsenal's Midfield Shift: Hjulmand's Departure and Focus on Guimaraes
Arsenal’s midfield rebuild is being forced down a different path after Atletico Madrid moved decisively to close a deal for Morten Hjulmand.
Diego Simeone’s side are reported to have agreed a £38million fee with Sporting CP for the Denmark international, long admired in North London and widely described as a lifelong Arsenal supporter. According to Fabrizio Romano and Ruben Aria, the 27-year-old is set to sign a five-year contract in the Spanish capital, with his arrival scheduled for Thursday to finalise the move.
Atletico had previously seen an offer turned down by Sporting, a moment that seemed to open a door for Arsenal to pounce. That door has now slammed shut. Reports in Spain say terms are fully agreed and paperwork is being exchanged, with Hjulmand’s own determination to join Simeone playing a decisive role after Sporting indicated they would sell at the right price.
For Arsenal, Hjulmand’s impending move to La Liga removes one of the more attainable options from their shortlist and throws the spotlight even more intensely on Bruno Guimaraes.
Guimaraes at the centre of a North London push
The Newcastle United captain has made clear he wants a new challenge, with The Guardian reporting that he has informed the club of his desire to leave St James’ Park and move to North London. Arsenal, already long-term admirers, are said to be preparing a bid in the region of £60million.
Guimaraes’ stance comes at a turbulent time for Newcastle. The Brazilian, fresh from the disappointment of a last-16 exit with Carlo Ancelotti’s side stunned by Norway and an Erling Haaland brace, now finds himself contemplating a departure that would continue a pattern of big-name exits on Tyneside.
Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have already gone at the end of the season, following Alexander Isak’s high-profile switch to Liverpool 12 months earlier. Losing Guimaraes as well would rip out another pillar of Eddie Howe’s project, and Newcastle are described as deeply reluctant to sell despite the player’s wish to leave and Arsenal’s growing intent.
Talks with the midfielder’s representatives last month have left Arsenal confident he is fully committed to the idea of joining the Premier League champions. The question now is whether their offer can drag Newcastle to the table in the wake of those previous departures.
Midfield priority, attack on the agenda
Midfield remains the central concern at the Emirates. Declan Rice’s long-term fitness has been flagged as an issue that cannot be ignored, pushing Arsenal towards strengthening the core of Mikel Arteta’s side while they are still on top domestically.
With Hjulmand seemingly gone and Guimaraes the primary target, other names sit in the background. Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi and Alex Scott have both been mentioned as alternative options, while uncertainty around Christian Norgaard’s future keeps him in the frame as a potential solution if primary pursuits stall.
Arsenal’s recruitment drive does not end there. The champions also want more firepower. Morgan Rogers has emerged as their leading attacking target, as reported by The Guardian, but Aston Villa’s stance is uncompromising: they are said to want in excess of £100million for the England international.
Julian Alvarez offers another route, a different profile but an equally expensive one, with Barcelona also circling. Any move for the Manchester City forward would require not just a huge fee but a convincing sporting project to tempt him away.
So Arsenal stand at a familiar summer crossroads. One midfield target is Madrid-bound. Another, in Bruno Guimaraes, is pushing for the move they crave but tied to a club that can still say no. With rivals strengthening and prices climbing, how bold will the champions be when the first serious bid lands on Newcastle’s desk?
