Arsenal's Pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes Faces Setback
Arsenal’s move for Bruno Guimaraes has hit its first wall, but the Premier League champions are not walking away just yet.
The London club have seen an opening proposal worth around £55 million knocked back by Newcastle United, with the Tyneside hierarchy making it clear that such a figure does not even start the conversation for their midfield linchpin.
Arsenal test Newcastle’s resolve
Over the past 24 hours, Arsenal have stepped up a long-standing pursuit. Bruno Guimaraes has been on their radar for some time, and with Mikel Arteta hunting a new central midfielder and a left-sided attacker this summer, the Brazilian has moved back to the top of the agenda.
Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that Arsenal initially made what he described as an “exploratory approach” to Guimaraes’ camp, mirroring a move previously made by Manchester United before the window opened. At that stage, there had been no direct contact with Newcastle, and the message from St James’ Park was blunt: they did not wish to sell.
That stance has now been tested. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Arsenal followed up with a concrete approach, this time going to both the player’s side and Newcastle. The intention, Romano reported, was to explore a deal at around £55m. Newcastle’s response was swift. They “closed the doors” on any sale at that price.
Newcastle’s position is clear. They will not be drawn into a bargain over a player who has become central to their project, even after the disappointment of missing out on European football.
Guimaraes, for his part, is not agitating for a move. Romano stressed that the Brazilian is leaving the situation in Newcastle’s hands and is respecting the club’s stance, a detail that strengthens the Magpies’ grip on negotiations.
Rejected – but not the end of it
In Brazil, outlet GeGlobo went further, reporting that Arsenal’s £55m offer has been “rejected” outright, but that the Gunners “will make a new bid”. The first shot has been fired; it did not land. That does not mean the attack is over.
Arsenal’s need for midfield reinforcement is obvious. Their push for Guimaraes underlines a desire to add a commanding, press-resistant presence at the heart of Arteta’s side, someone capable of dictating tempo and breaking lines in the most intense games. Whether they are prepared to climb towards the kind of figure Newcastle would entertain remains to be seen, but the door is not fully shut from north London’s perspective.
Monga chase gathers pace
While the Guimaraes saga brews, Arsenal are moving more decisively on another front.
Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga has emerged as a key target, and Arsenal have already had an initial “cheeky” bid turned down. That has not dented their belief. According to Football Insider, the champions are “confident of finalising a deal” for the highly rated starlet this summer.
Talks between the clubs are ongoing as both sides try to strike an agreement without resorting to a tribunal. Crucially for Arsenal, Monga is understood to be willing to make the move, a factor that significantly tilts the situation in their favour.
Two very different pursuits, then. One for an established Premier League powerhouse, fiercely protected by his club. Another for a rising talent ready to take the next step. Arsenal have been rebuffed once on Guimaraes and once on Monga, but the pattern is clear: this is a window in which they intend to keep pushing.
