A member of the ground staff appeared to lose control of a heavy pitch roller on the touchline. The machine veered towards the players. Townsend had nowhere to go.

His left leg was briefly trapped under the vehicle as it rumbled over him, a horrifying image for anyone watching. In an instant, a routine pre-match stretch turned into a genuine scare.

Then, remarkably, he got up.
