Andros Townsend's Bizarre Encounter with a Pitch Roller in Thailand

Andros Townsend has survived Premier League full-backs, wet Wednesday nights and the wind howling around the bet365 Stadium. What he probably didn’t expect, deep into the final stretch of his career, was to be taken out by a pitch roller in Thailand.

The former England winger, now with PT Prachuap in Thai League 1, was involved in a bizarre pre-match incident on Saturday night ahead of a fixture at Pattani. As Townsend went through his warm-up, a member of the home staff appeared to lose control of a heavy pitch roller, which suddenly veered into the 35-year-old.

The machine clattered into him and his left leg was briefly trapped underneath. For a moment, it looked serious. Staff rushed over, and the clip quickly began to spread on social media, with fans stunned at what they were seeing.

Townsend, capped 13 times by England and known to many now as a regular ITV pundit, managed to get back to his feet and, remarkably, still played. He came off the bench late on as Prachuap wrapped up a 3-0 win, the shock of the collision giving way to relief that he had avoided major injury.

Once the dust settled, Townsend did what he does best off the pitch: he turned it into a joke.

Recently, he had posted on Instagram about swapping the cold, windswept away days of his Premier League past for sun-drenched trips in Thailand, cheekily contrasting life in Thai League 1 with those infamous journeys to Stoke’s bet365 Stadium.

After the roller incident, he went back to Instagram and delivered the punchline.

"It turns out Stoke away wasn’t so bad after all. Swipe to see why," he wrote on his story, pointing followers towards the now-viral footage of the collision.

Another Thai social media post crowned him "The King of Memes in Thai League history." Townsend leaned straight into it, replying, "trust me" followed by four laughing emojis.

He once worried about full-backs closing him down. Now it’s ground equipment. The setting has changed, the sense of humour clearly hasn’t.
