Alejandro Balde's Future at Barcelona in Jeopardy

Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future is hanging by a thread.

The La Masia left-back has been left out of the squad for Sunday’s trip to Elche, a brutal signal that the first team star could be heading for the exit door far sooner than expected.

Flick’s public challenge

The situation exploded on Saturday when Jijantes claimed Balde had decided to leave his boyhood club. The report dropped just days after his agent, Jorge Mendes, met with Barcelona’s Sporting Director on Thursday, and hours after Hansi Flick had sent a pointed message in his prematch press conference.

Asked directly about Balde, the Barça coach didn’t hide behind clichés.

“It’s a difficult question because he has enormous quality and it’s important to know if a player is convinced to be able to compete in his position. That’s what I want to see from all my players,” Flick said of the 22-year-old.

He pushed the theme even harder.

“Every day I see what the players do – the level – and if they show me that they have the level to play. In the end, we have to play as a team, only then will we have success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent.”

For a young defender already under scrutiny, those words cut deep. They also framed the club’s next move.

Mixed signals, same conclusion

By Saturday night, the story twisted again. Mundo Deportivo reported that Balde had actually taken Flick’s comments as fuel, not rejection, and that he was prepared to stay and fight for his place.

The message from the player’s side was clear enough: he wants to compete at Barcelona. If the club doesn’t share that vision, he will listen to offers.

Then came the squad list for Elche.

No Balde.

In the context of the week’s events, his omission feels less like rotation and more like a verdict. For all the talk of motivation and commitment, being cut from the travelling group makes him look, in sporting terms, as good as gone.

Premier League on alert

If Barcelona do open the door, there will be no shortage of interest.

Balde is a “Made in La Masia” full-back, already capped by Spain and still young enough to work his way back into Luis de la Fuente’s plans. That profile has kept him firmly on the radar of Premier League clubs.

Right now, Manchester United appear best placed. They need defensive reinforcements after a sobering 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City in their league opener on Saturday, and Balde fits the kind of long-term rebuild they are trying to sell.

For Barcelona, a sale would bring in much-needed funds. For Balde, it could be a reset in a league that has admired him from afar for some time.

New pecking order at left-back

While Balde waits for clarity, Flick has to pick a team.

With the academy product cut from the Elche trip, Jordi Pesquer is now expected to start at left-back, as had already been suggested earlier in the week. It is a remarkable rise in status for Pesquer, and a stark illustration of how quickly the hierarchy can shift.

New permanent signing Joao Cancelo has made the squad as well after completing his move from Al-Hilal, but he may not yet be ready to start. Match fitness, travel, and adaptation all work against him for now.

So Barcelona head to Elche with a new order on the flank, and a glaring absence.
