West Ham Break Transfer Record to Sign Arne Engels from Celtic

West Ham United have issued a blunt statement of intent for life outside the Premier League, smashing the EFL transfer record to sign Arne Engels from Celtic in a £22m deal.

The 22-year-old Belgium international has agreed a five-year contract, with the club hailing the move as a “record fee paid by an EFL Championship club”. The figure eclipses the £17.5m Ipswich Town spent last summer to bring in Norway forward Sindre Walle Egeli.

Relegation in May has forced West Ham into a reset. This signing makes it clear they are not planning to linger in the Championship.

A versatile centrepiece for the rebuild

Engels arrives from the Scottish champions as a modern, multi-purpose weapon. Comfortable in central midfield, at right-back or on the right wing, he gives West Ham flexibility and quality in several areas of the pitch.

He will not feature in their opening Championship fixture away at Burnley on Sunday, with his debut instead pencilled in for the home derby against Charlton Athletic at the London Stadium on Saturday, 22 August. That game already felt significant. Now it looks like a landmark afternoon in the club’s new era.

Nils Koppen, West Ham’s director of player recruitment, underlined just how long this move has been in the works.

“Arne is a player we have been tracking for some time as a key target,” he told the club’s website. “For a player who is still very young with his best years in front of him, he has very good experience and has established himself at a big club, showing consistency and confidence.

“Arne has the right traits, both as a player and as a character, to fit into what we are trying to build moving forward. He is very motivated to be here for this challenge.”

Title winner with room to grow

Engels already carries a winning pedigree into a dressing room that must quickly adapt to new surroundings. He has four senior caps for Belgium and arrives in east London as a back-to-back Scottish Premiership champion with Celtic.

He joined the Glasgow club from Augsburg in August 2024, having come through at Club Brugge, and quickly settled into the demands of a title race. That blend of youth and experience is exactly what West Ham are gambling on.

For Engels, the mission is straightforward.

“It's a really nice project to come into,” he said. “To try to go back to the Premier League. That's the big goal.

“It's just up to me to hopefully help the team with it and together with the supporters to get some wins. Hopefully it's going to be a good year.”

Fourth piece of a bold summer

Engels becomes West Ham’s fourth signing of the summer as they reshape a squad designed for the Premier League into one capable of fighting through the grind of the Championship.

Venezuela midfielder Keiber Lamadrid, Dutch defender Joel Veltman and Israel winger Manor Solomon have already arrived. Engels, at a record-breaking fee, is the headline act.

The money, the contract length, the profile of the player – all of it points in the same direction. West Ham are treating this as a one-season detour.

Whether the Championship allows that kind of certainty is another matter entirely.
