Waterford FC Dominates Sligo Rovers to Reach FAI Cup Semi-Finals

Waterford FC are back in the Club Orange FAI Men’s Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2022, and they got there with a ruthless second-half surge that swept Sligo Rovers aside at the RSC.

It wasn’t slick from the start. It didn’t need to be.

Graham Coughlan’s side were patchy before the break, occasionally loose in possession and generous with territory, but they still walked down the tunnel with the lead and the feeling that there was far more in the tank.

That feeling proved right.

Amond settles the early nerves

Waterford struck early and never really looked back.

On eight minutes, Conan Noonan hooked a clever ball towards the back post, where Tommy Lonergan rose to nod it back across goal. Pádraig Amond saw his first header beaten away by Sam Sargeant, but the danger didn’t die.

The loose ball fell to Evan McLaughlin on the edge of the area. He slipped a neat pass back into Amond’s path and the veteran forward, ice-cool and close in, drilled a right-footed finish into the net. One chance, one goal, and the home crowd could breathe.

They almost undid that good work five minutes later.

Benny Couto, under little pressure, passed straight into the stride of Luke Pearce. The Sligo striker burst clear, only to find Stephen McMullan racing from his line. The Waterford keeper stood tall, smothered at Pearce’s feet and preserved the lead with a big early moment.

Waterford then threatened again through McLaughlin, who lashed over from the edge of the box, but the rhythm of the half began to tilt towards Sligo.

Seb Quirk started to find pockets of space, and on 39 minutes he took a pass from Gareth McElroy and whipped a dangerous cross into the area. Archie Meekison had stolen into position, yet failed to get the decisive touch. It was the kind of half-chance that an underdog needs to take.

Just when Sligo looked comfortable, Waterford almost hit them with a hammer blow.

In the final minute of the half, Jorgen Voilas slid Amond in, 16 yards out. The striker met it with a thunderous effort that looked destined for the top corner. Carl McHugh, Sligo’s captain, retreated to his line and produced a superb headed clearance to keep his side alive at the interval.

Blues explode after the break

Whatever Coughlan said at half-time, it worked. Waterford came out with a different edge, sharper in the press and far more precise in the final third.

Five minutes into the second period, the pressure told.

Couto released Noonan down the left and the winger picked his moment, standing up a cross to the back post. Voilas climbed highest, nodding the ball down into Lonergan’s path. Ten yards out, the forward didn’t hesitate, smashing a crisp right-footed strike beyond Sargeant.

2-0. The RSC roared. Sligo sagged.

Waterford smelt blood and kept coming.

On 59 minutes, they carved out a third that summed up their dominance after the restart. Noah Mawene slid McLaughlin into space on the left, and the winger drove a vicious ball across the face of goal. Ollie Denham, stretching to cut it out, could only turn it into his own net. Harsh on the defender, but fully in keeping with the pattern of the half.

Three minutes later, it was almost four.

Couto laid the ball back to McLaughlin on the edge of the box and he unleashed a powerful left-footed strike. Sargeant, easily Sligo’s busiest player, reacted brilliantly to tip it over the bar and prevent the scoreline from becoming a rout.

Sligo tried to respond. Alex Nolan, introduced from the bench, came closest on 71 minutes when he cut inside and drove a left-footed effort inches wide of McMullan’s left-hand post. It was a reminder of threat, but nothing more. Waterford never really looked like letting them back in.

As the minutes ticked away, Coughlan emptied his bench. The job was already done. The intensity dipped, the noise in the stands didn’t.

Waterford had long since secured their place in the semi-finals. Now the question is how far this side, brimming with confidence and backed by a home support sensing something, can go from here.
