Usain Bolt Set to Join Wythenshawe FC Veterans League

Usain Bolt is poised to swap the starting blocks for a Sunday league pitch in Greater Manchester, if an online squad list is to be believed.

The eight-time Olympic champion, still the fastest man in history over 100m and 200m, is listed as a player for Wythenshawe FC Veterans on the Football Association’s Full-Time website, hinting at a remarkable cameo in the Cheshire Veterans League.

From world records to veterans’ league

Wythenshawe’s veterans side is no ordinary Sunday outfit. The team, managed by former Manchester City and Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Ireland, is packed with ex-Premier League names and enough top-flight experience to fill a dressing room wall with framed shirts.

Last season alone, their squad boasted more than 1,800 English top-flight appearances. Danny Drinkwater, Antonio Valencia, Joleon Lescott, Emile Heskey, Marc Albrighton, Nedum Onuoha and Papiss Cissé are among the players to have pulled on the Wythenshawe shirt, turning veterans’ football into a weekly reunion of familiar faces.

Now, at 40, Bolt’s name has appeared alongside them.

Bolt’s football itch never went away

The Jamaican sprint icon has never hidden his love for football. A devoted Manchester United supporter, he chased the dream seriously after hanging up his spikes following the 2017 World Championships, joining Australian side Central Coast Mariners in a bid to carve out a professional career.

That adventure was brief, but it underlined how deep the obsession ran. Bolt has since remained a regular presence in the Soccer Aid charity matches, where his pace, power and showmanship have made him one of the star attractions.

A step into the Cheshire Veterans League would be a different stage entirely – smaller crowds, tighter pitches, and opponents with stories of their own from the professional game.

For now, Wythenshawe have not formally announced Bolt’s arrival and have been contacted for comment. But his name on that squad list is enough to spark the imagination.
