Premier League Clubs Target Emerging Talents Ahead of January

Premier League giants are already moving pieces for January, and the market is starting to take shape around a cluster of emerging talents and unsettled names.

Liverpool track £51.5m Dutch prodigy

Liverpool had scouts in place as AZ Alkmaar met Sunderland in the Europa League this week, with 20-year-old Netherlands midfielder Kees Smit the focus of attention. Rated at around £51.5m, Smit is drawing a crowd: Chelsea, Tottenham, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are all keeping close watch on his development.

Manchester United eye Branthwaite

At Old Trafford, Manchester United are monitoring Jarrad Branthwaite. The 24-year-old Everton and England defender has become a regular point of discussion among recruiters as United weigh up defensive reinforcements.

Tottenham push for Arthur Dias – and weigh Icardi move

Tottenham are out in front in the chase for Arthur Dias. The 19-year-old Brazil defender, currently at Athletico Paranaense and valued at 30m euros, is also on the radar of Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Brentford, but Spurs are leading the race.

They are also considering a very different type of signing. Free agent Mauro Icardi, 33, is under discussion after his departure from Galatasaray. Any deal would be agreed now but Spurs would have to wait until January to register the Argentine striker.

Balogun set for Monaco exit

In Monaco, the decision has been made. The club plan to sell United States striker Folarin Balogun in January. The 25-year-old had been close to joining Everton on deadline day before changing his mind, and that late U-turn now looks like a prelude to a winter exit.

The French side have also opened the door to another potential departure. A January move for 22-year-old midfielder Lamine Camara is described as possible, with Liverpool and Chelsea both interested in the Senegal international.

Young defenders and midfield gems in demand

Across Europe, scouts are circling some of the game’s next wave of defenders. Several European clubs are tracking 20-year-old English defender Josh Acheampong’s situation at Chelsea, sensing an opportunity if his pathway to the first team remains blocked.

Real Madrid, never shy about moving early for elite talent, are ready to go all out for Abdellah Ouazane. The 17-year-old Morocco midfielder, currently at Ajax, is being lined up as the Spanish club’s next midfield project.

Newcastle United, meanwhile, are preparing another approach for Djurgarden’s Bo Hegland. The 22-year-old Norwegian midfielder turned down a move in the summer, but Newcastle are set to revive their interest as they look to deepen their squad.

Arsenal, Brighton and Aston Villa are all watching 17-year-old Luca Weinhandl at Sturm Graz. The Austrian midfielder is valued at around £20m and has quickly become one of the most closely monitored teenagers in his position.

City and Liverpool circle Nmecha

At the top end of the market, Manchester City and Liverpool are both keen on Germany midfielder Felix Nmecha. The 25-year-old Borussia Dortmund player will not come cheap, with the Bundesliga club expected to demand between 80m and 90m euros.
