Tottenham Sign Andy Robertson on Free Transfer

Tottenham have moved decisively in the summer market, confirming the signing of former Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer, a deal that quietly signals a serious change of gear in north London.

The Scotland captain will officially join Spurs on 1 July after his Liverpool contract expired this month, ending a hugely successful Anfield spell that brought 378 appearances and a cabinet full of major honours. For Tottenham, a club long accused of lacking hardened winners, this is a rare chance to plug that gap with one of the Premier League’s most decorated and relentless competitors.

This move has been months in the making. Robertson came close to swapping Merseyside for north London in January, only for Liverpool to halt the transfer when a recall for Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma failed to materialise. The door slammed shut then. It stayed ajar behind the scenes.

Tottenham have changed head coach since that winter window, but the new man, Roberto De Zerbi, did not hesitate. He has given the signing his full approval, making Robertson one of the first major statements of his tenure.

“Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” the Italian said. “He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch. I can’t wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him.”

That last line matters. Spurs have talent, but not many serial winners. Robertson has lived in the sharp end of title races, Champions League nights and cup finals. He has navigated dressing rooms full of stars and pressure that never eases. De Zerbi wants that edge embedded into a squad still learning how to compete across a full season.

For Robertson, this is a new chapter in a league he knows as well as anyone. For Tottenham, it is more than just a free transfer. It is a deliberate step towards a tougher, more seasoned version of themselves under a coach determined to challenge the established order.
