Tottenham's Injury Woes Ahead of Premier League Opener

Tottenham face their Premier League opener at Brentford without new captain Micky van de Ven and vice-captain Pedro Porro, handing Roberto De Zerbi an early-season headache before a ball has even been kicked.

Injury blows before Brentford trip

Both defenders have been ruled out of Saturday’s trip to west London, with Pape Matar Sarr also joining the absentee list after feeling hamstring pain on Friday.

De Zerbi laid out the situation in his pre-match briefing. “Micky is not on the list for tomorrow, like Pedro Porro,” he said. “Pape Matar Sarr no, because he felt some pain in his hamstring today. Nothing serious, but we don’t take risks.”

So three key pieces, gone in the space of a few days. Not the launchpad Spurs had in mind.

Van de Ven close, but not quite ready

There is at least some encouragement over Van de Ven’s condition. The centre-back has stepped up his work with the squad after an issue picked up during the club’s pre-season trip to Australia.

“Today, he worked the group, and he is going very well,” De Zerbi explained. “He suffered a problem during the pre-season of Australia, I don’t know if it was the flight, but not a big problem.”

The message is clear: Spurs expect him back soon, but not soon enough for Brentford.

Defensive reshuffle and armband intrigue

With Van de Ven and Porro both sidelined, De Zerbi will lean on his depth at the back. “We have [Marcos] Senesi, we have Ben Davies and in the right condition to play the game tomorrow,” he said.

The injuries also rip up the leadership plan for opening day. Van de Ven and Porro, captain and first vice-captain, are both out. Ben Davies, third in line, is available but not expected to start. James Maddison, fourth on the list, is short of match fitness.

That opens the door for Archie Gray. Fifth in the hierarchy, the teenager could find himself not only deputising for Porro at right-back but also walking out with the armband.

A Premier League debut as stand-in right-back and acting captain? For Gray and for Spurs, the new season may begin with a very different look than anyone imagined.
