De Zerbi did little to cool the speculation when he spoke on Friday.

"I didn’t expect a transfer window like we have done. I think we can do one player more in one specific position," he said. "Yesterday we went to dinner with the owners, Johan [Lange, sporting director] and Vinai [Venkatesham, chief executive] and we spoke about this. All of us are on the same page and a very good connection."

Ndiaye’s summer has already taken one dramatic twist.

He looked set for a lucrative switch to the Saudi Pro League, with Al-Hilal reportedly close to sealing a deal earlier in the window. The move was said to be on the brink of completion before the player pulled back, opting against the Saudi route.

That decision changed everything. His insistence on staying in the Premier League has opened the door to City, Arsenal and now Spurs, and turned him from a near-certainty for Riyadh into one of the most talked-about names in England’s market.
