Tottenham’s £237m Rebuild: Another Bomba on the Way

Tottenham’s summer overhaul is not slowing down. Roberto De Zerbi has made that perfectly clear.

Six signings are already through the door, around £237million committed, and yet the Spurs head coach insists the squad is still incomplete. The club want more firepower. And, by his own admission, they are closing in on it.

“When I want one player, I become like a shark. No chance to say no,” De Zerbi told football.london, a line that neatly sums up his stance on this window. He says roughly “60 per cent” of the transfer project is done.

“Now we have another bomba.”

Spurs eye attacking ‘bomba’

The next explosion is expected to come in the final third. Tottenham are prioritising attacking reinforcements between now and the close of the window on September 1, with a winger at the top of the list and the possibility of another striker also on the agenda.

Standard Sport understands that Manchester City winger Savinho is among the leading options. The Brazilian has informed City he wants to leave in search of regular minutes, and his profile fits exactly what De Zerbi and sporting director Johan Lange mapped out when they sat down in March to plan this rebuild.

Savinho’s direct running and ability to dart in behind defences have pushed him high up Spurs’ shortlist. Those traits are not just a luxury in De Zerbi’s system; they are a requirement.

Asked whether a deal for a new attacker was close, De Zerbi admitted there were still details to be ironed out but made no attempt to hide his optimism that talks will be wrapped up soon.

Built from the full-backs out

The Italian’s thinking is clear: any winger who arrives must enhance, not hinder, what he sees as one of the strongest full-back groups in world football.

“No two players are the same,” he said. “A winger can be a very wide winger, one able to come inside, a winger without a full-back, a winger able to play with the full-back.”

That last part is the key. Spurs, in his view, already have the platform.

“We have four great full-backs at the moment, maybe the four most important full-backs in the world, because I think Pedro Porro is the best right-back in the world, with [Destiny] Udogie, Robertson, and Djed Spence can play right and left.

“Before bringing in a winger, we have to consider the full-back, because we start from the full-back, from the player we already have, no?”

It is a revealing window into how he wants Tottenham to play. The wide men will not simply hug the touchline and wait for the ball. They will be chosen specifically to unlock Porro, Udogie, Andy Robertson and Djed Spence, to create overloads, to stretch and then tear through defensive structures.

Heavy spending, clear plan

The scale of the rebuild is already striking. Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke have arrived for substantial fees, reshaping the spine of the side. Free transfers Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have added experience and depth without further straining the budget.

Yet De Zerbi talks about this as a staged project, not a one-summer gamble. Sixty per cent done. Forty per cent still to go. The next piece, he believes, will change the face of his attack.

Tottenham have spent big, but not blindly. The next few weeks will show whether that “shark” instinct in the market delivers the winger who can turn a bold plan into a genuinely dangerous front line.
