Thomas Partey Signs with Al Shabab After Villarreal Exit

Thomas Partey has signed for Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab, sealing a one-year deal after leaving Villarreal as a free agent.

The Ghana midfielder, now 33, became available in June when Villarreal confirmed they would not renew his contract, ending his brief stint in Spain. Al Shabab announced his arrival with a short, pointed message on their official X account on Friday: “Just feels right.”

Partey had only joined Villarreal last summer, also on a free, following the expiry of his Arsenal contract. His move to Saudi Arabia marks the latest step in a career that has taken him from Atletico Madrid to north London, then on to La Liga again and now the Middle East.

He spent five years at Arsenal after arriving from Atletico in October 2020, a marquee signing at the time, and leaves European football with over a decade of top-level experience behind him.

A dressing room full of familiar names

Partey will walk into a squad already packed with players well known to European audiences.

Josh Brownhill, a key figure at Burnley for five years, made the same switch last year, trading Turf Moor for the White Lions. Yannick Carrasco, Partey’s former teammate at Atletico Madrid, is another prominent name in the Al Shabab ranks and offers a familiar face in a new league.

The club, who recently appointed Thomas Letsch as head coach, have built a spine of ex-European talent. Tin Jedvaj, Daniel Podence, Vincent Sierro and Yacine Adli are all on the books, giving Al Shabab a distinctly continental flavour as the Saudi Pro League continues to lure players from Europe’s major competitions.

World Cup involvement and off-field legal battle

On the international stage, Partey remains a central figure for Ghana. He started three of the Black Stars’ four matches at the 2026 World Cup, anchoring the midfield on the biggest stage. One game, though, he watched from afar.

He missed Ghana’s group clash with Panama after his visa application to enter Canada was refused. Under Canadian law, foreign nationals can be deemed inadmissible even without a conviction, a rule that intersected directly with his ongoing legal case in England.

Partey has been charged with seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in London, relating to alleged incidents between 2020 and 2022. The charges involve three women. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts and consistently denied the allegations.

A trial was originally scheduled for November 2026 at Southwark Crown Court. That date has been pushed back, with proceedings now due to begin on 8 June 2027.

So Partey arrives in Riyadh carrying both a heavyweight CV and a looming court case. Al Shabab get a seasoned midfielder for the present. His future, though, will be shaped just as much by what happens far from the pitch.
