Sunderland Signs €30m Toulouse Star Methalie

Sunderland have thrown their weight behind the idea that last season was no fluke. They have spent big to prove it.

The Wearside club have completed the signing of highly rated left-back Methalie from Toulouse in a deal worth €28 million plus €2m in add-ons, according to The Athletic – a fee that places him among the most expensive signings in their history and underlines their growing ambition in the Premier League.

Fresh from a seventh-place finish and Europa League qualification, Sunderland have moved aggressively to strengthen a squad now facing the strain of Thursday-Sunday football. Methalie, just 20, arrives as one of Ligue 1’s standout young defenders and will wear the No. 6 shirt at the Stadium of Light. He becomes the club’s second summer recruit after Thomas Meunier’s arrival in July, adding further experience and pedigree down the flanks.

The message from the boardroom is clear: this is not a team content with a one-off surge up the table.

A young defender buying into a big project

Methalie did not hide his excitement after sealing the move to the North East. Speaking to Sunderland’s official website, he laid out exactly why the project appealed.

"I'm really excited to be here and can't wait to pull on a Sunderland shirt for the first time. This is a brilliant time to join the club. I followed Sunderland's progress last season and it was incredible to see the team finish seventh and qualify for the Europa League. When I heard about the opportunity to come here, it was an easy decision. I'm really excited to play in the Premier League and Europa League and to experience that with the Sunderland fans."

There was no sense of a player simply chasing a transfer. His words carried the conviction of someone who believes he is stepping into a club on the rise.

Methalie arrives off the back of a strong 2025-26 campaign with Toulouse, in which he made 30 first-team appearances and chipped in with two goals and two assists. Those numbers, for a defender, hint at a player comfortable in both halves of the pitch. His own assessment of the move pointed straight at Sunderland’s trajectory.

"I know how ambitious the club is, and I want to help the team continue to progress and give the supporters plenty to be proud of."

For a fanbase that has ridden the full emotional spectrum over the past decade, that is exactly what they want to hear.

Rapid rise from Toulouse to the Premier League

Methalie’s path to English football has been steep and swift. He joined the Toulouse academy in 2014 and climbed through the youth ranks before earning promotion to the first team in the summer of 2025. Once he broke through, he did not look back.

After making his Ligue 1 debut in August 2025, he quickly established himself as a regular starter. Coaches trusted him early; opponents learned his name quickly.

Standing at six-foot-two, he brings size and presence to the left side of defence. At Toulouse, he operated mainly as a left wing-back in Carles Martinez’s 3-4-3 system, asked to own the entire flank. Martinez, who left in June to replace Kasper Hjulmand as Bayer Leverkusen head coach, leaned heavily on Methalie’s stamina and physicality to give balance and solidity to his side.

That workload in France offers a glimpse of what Sunderland think they are buying: a defender who can handle the physical demands of the Premier League and the tactical discipline required in Europe, while still carrying a threat going forward.
