Sunderland's Bold Move for Jack Grealish on Loan

Sunderland have stepped into heavyweight territory. According to The Athletic, the Wearside club have lodged an ambitious loan bid for Manchester City winger Jack Grealish, a move that would send one of English football’s most high-profile talents to the Stadium of Light.

The proposal is bold. Sunderland want Grealish on loan, with City still footing a large chunk of his sizeable wages. Built into the offer is a clause giving the Black Cats the option to make the transfer permanent next summer, when the 30-year-old’s current deal at the Etihad Stadium is due to expire.

If it happens, it would mark a dramatic turn in Grealish’s career.

From Treble pillar to the fringes

Not long ago, Grealish was a central figure in a historic Manchester City side. He started regularly on the left in the 2022-23 campaign, making 50 appearances as Pep Guardiola’s team swept to a Treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup. He looked embedded in the project, part of the furniture in a side that bulldozed Europe.

The picture now is very different.

By the 2024-25 season, his league role had shrunk to just seven starts. The decline was underlined on the final day of the campaign, when he was left out of the squad entirely against Fulham. Guardiola described the decision as “nothing personal,” but the omission was followed by another blow: Grealish did not make the group for the Club World Cup either.

This season has started in the same vein. He has come off the bench in both of City’s opening fixtures, appearing in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal and then again as a second-half substitute in Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Bournemouth. For a player of his profile, those cameos tell their own story.

City’s stance has been clear for some time. Reports in June indicated the champions were prepared to let their former record signing leave, either on loan or permanently. Grealish joined City from Aston Villa in a landmark £100m deal and has racked up 159 appearances in all competitions, but the club are now ready to listen.

Sunderland’s Europa League statement

Into that uncertainty has stepped Sunderland. Regis Le Bris wants proven quality to anchor a squad about to test itself in the Europa League, and Grealish sits at the very top of that wish list.

The Grealish pursuit is not a one-off splash; it is part of a wider, calculated push. Sunderland are also working on a deal for Marseille winger Igor Paixao. The 26-year-old Brazilian scored 12 goals in Ligue 1 last season and, crucially, personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block. The challenge lies in striking an agreement with Marseille.

The Black Cats have already been busy. Experienced full-back Thomas Meunier has arrived to add nous and reliability to the back line. Young defender Dayann Methalie has also been brought in to deepen defensive options. In midfield, Jules Ahoka has joined to give Le Bris more variety and energy in the centre of the pitch.

This is a squad being built with Thursday nights in Europe firmly in mind. Grealish, with his Champions League pedigree and big-game experience, would instantly become the face of that project.

A career at a crossroads

For Grealish, the move would offer something simple but priceless: games. His loan spell at Everton last season showed both the promise and the fragility of his current situation. Under David Moyes, he managed two goals and six assists in 22 appearances before a stress fracture in his foot in January cut the campaign short.

Everton had an option to buy him permanently for around £50m. They walked away from it. The injury, the fee, the wider context of their squad planning – all of it combined to leave Grealish back at City, fighting for minutes he has not been getting.

Now Sunderland are trying to seize that opening.

If City accept the structure on the table – subsidised wages this season, a potential permanent move next summer – Grealish would swap the periphery of a superclub for a central role in a team stepping back onto the European stage.

For Sunderland, it would be a signing that announces their return to the continental conversation. For Grealish, it could be the moment he chooses between fading quietly at the Etihad and leading a revival in the North East.
