Summer Transfer Market: Big Moves and Key Decisions

The summer market has exploded into life across Europe, and the money is moving fast.

At St James’ Park, in Naples, in west London and beyond, clubs are gambling, resetting and in some cases scrambling as deadlines edge closer and ambitions harden.

Newcastle: big decisions, bigger cheques

The Joelinton story cuts straight to the heart of Newcastle’s rebuild. According to the Daily Mail, the Brazilian told the club shortly after last season that he wanted a move to Saudi Arabia. No formal bid has landed, so for now he stays on Tyneside, a key piece of a squad that could yet look very different by the end of the window.

Newcastle’s attention has already shifted towards the future of their goal. They are closing in on Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, with talks now centred on the payment structure. The Czech international has a £25.65m release clause, and both clubs are working on the final details. Finding a long-term successor to Nick Pope has been a priority all summer after the failed pursuit of James Trafford; Hornicek, 24, arrives with 88 senior appearances for Braga and a World Cup on his CV.

Change is coming in the dugout as well. TEAMtalk report that Newcastle have reached full agreement to appoint Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach. The club will pay around £8m in compensation to prise the 38-year-old from Al Ahli, with the German expected to join up with the squad at their La Manga training camp on Saturday, replacing Eddie Howe ahead of the new Premier League season. Earlier reports suggested Al-Ahli would demand close to £9.4m; either way, Newcastle are paying a premium to get their man.

Out wide, the recruitment drive continues. Newcastle have tracked Real Betis winger Abde Ezzalzouli for weeks, sending scouts to watch the Morocco international towards the end of last season. Betis president Angel Haro has already admitted Abde is “not untouchable”, and Estadio Deportivo claim Newcastle have informed the Spanish club they are willing to meet his £51.3m release clause. The deal has stalled on one key point: the player’s own ambition. Abde only wants Champions League football, leaving Newcastle with a major sales job if they are to convince the 24-year-old to swap Seville for the North East.

Leverkusen, Napoli and a left-back on the move

In Germany, Bayer Leverkusen look set to strengthen a title-winning squad with another carefully targeted piece.

They are closing in on Miguel Gutierrez, with reports in Italy suggesting a deal with Napoli is in its final stages. The agreement is expected to land between £22m and £26m. Leverkusen have improved their initial bid as Napoli prepare to cash in on the Spanish left-back after just one season, using the profit to fuel further business of their own this summer.

Bournemouth swoop for Benfica’s captain

Bournemouth have pounced. Antonio Silva, fresh from captaining boyhood club Benfica in a Europa League qualifier, has agreed a cut-price move to the South Coast. The 22-year-old Portugal international is travelling for a medical this weekend after negotiating a deal worth £25.7m.

Chelsea: punished, but still spending and joking

Coventry smash their record, Brentford add energy

Coventry City are about to step into a new financial bracket. The Sky Blues have agreed a deal with Brighton worth an initial £22.5m for goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, a fee that will become the club’s record signing. Add-ons could push the cost higher, and Brighton have protected their asset with both a sell-on clause and a buy-back option.
