Southampton Trio Ruled Out for Germany Camp

Southampton will head into a key block of their pre-season without Caspar Jander, Finn Azaz or Sam Edozie, with the trio ruled out of the club’s eight-day trip to Germany through injury.

Tonda Eckert has named a 29-man travelling group for the camp in North Rhine-Westphalia, where Saints will face Eintracht Braunschweig and Preuben Munster on either side of an intensive week of work. The three absentees will instead remain at the Staplewood training ground to receive treatment on what the club regard as minor knocks.

Jander’s setback arrived early in the summer schedule. The midfielder was forced off during Southampton’s opening pre-season outing against Eastleigh last Saturday, cutting short a useful chance to impress as the squad ramps up towards competitive action.

Azaz and Edozie also sit out the trip at a time when places and roles are being sharpened. While none of the injuries are understood to be long term, missing a full overseas camp is never ideal, particularly for players looking to lock down minutes before the serious business begins.

Importance of the Camp

For Eckert, the camp in Germany offers a crucial stretch: tactical detail on the training pitch, fitness in the legs, and two fixtures to test combinations before the curtain goes up. The absence of three attack-minded options will nudge others into the spotlight and may subtly reshape his plans for the next fortnight.

Once the squad returns from North Rhine-Westphalia, the warm-up phase ends quickly. Southampton launch their EFL Cup campaign against Colchester United, then dive straight into the Championship season with an away trip to Watford.

The margins tighten from there. By the time Saints walk out at Vicarage Road, they will hope Jander, Azaz and Edozie have traded the treatment room for the team sheet.
