Cristiano Ronaldo's Near Transfer to Chelsea: Tuchel's Firm Rejection

Cristiano Ronaldo came far closer to wearing Chelsea blue than most realised during his turbulent second spell at Manchester United.

In 2022, as frustration grew at Old Trafford and Ronaldo searched for a way out, Stamford Bridge briefly opened as a serious escape route. It was Todd Boehly’s first transfer window in charge, and the new Chelsea co-owner was eager to make a statement.

Boehly, who also stepped in as acting sporting director during that period, sat down with super-agent Jorge Mendes. According to The Athletic, the American was captivated by the prospect of landing Ronaldo, whose United side had just finished sixth in the Premier League. The idea wasn’t a passing fantasy. A deal was discussed, and CR7’s name moved to the heart of Boehly’s early vision for the club.

Ronaldo’s second stint at United, from 2021 to 2023, had begun with fanfare and ended in frustration. As the relationship frayed and results sagged, Boehly sensed an opening: bring one of the game’s biggest global icons to London, light up Stamford Bridge, and send a message across Europe.

On the business side, the door was open. On the football side, it slammed shut.

The decisive voice belonged to Thomas Tuchel. Fresh from winning the Champions League the year before, the German coach held the authority to approve or reject such a move. And he did not hesitate.

Tuchel, The Athletic reports, made his opposition to any agreement for Ronaldo “very clear on several occasions”. That firm stance killed the transfer. Despite Boehly’s interest and exploratory talks with Mendes, Chelsea’s manager refused to bend his sporting plans around a 37-year-old superstar.

The result: no Ronaldo at Stamford Bridge, no shock twist in his Premier League story – and a vivid early example of the power struggle shaping Boehly’s new Chelsea era.
