Shrewsbury Town Sign Leicester's Michael Golding on Loan

Shrewsbury Town have moved to plug their midfield gap by bringing in Leicester City youngster Michael Golding on loan for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old arrives with a Premier League education behind him. Raised at Chelsea, Golding came through the academy at Stamford Bridge and finally touched first-team football in January 2024, stepping off the bench in an FA Cup tie for his only senior appearance for the Blues.

Leicester saw enough to spend about £4m on him that summer, tying him to a long-term deal and pitching him as part of their next cycle. His Foxes debut came at the end of the 2024-25 campaign, a grim finish to a season that ended in relegation from the Premier League.

Now he drops into League One with a point to prove.

Golding becomes Shrewsbury’s ninth signing of the window and walks straight into a clear role. Town are without experienced midfielder Jack Price for several weeks after a hamstring injury, and the new arrival is expected to shoulder a chunk of that responsibility.

“We’re really excited and appreciative of Leicester, how they have accommodated the move,” head coach Gavin Cowan told BBC Radio Shropshire. “He’s been on our radar for a while. He’s a young guy who wants to reignite his career and will be a really good addition.”

The deal underlines Shrewsbury’s intent to freshen the squad with hungry, upwardly mobile talent rather than short-term stopgaps.

And the recruitment drive may not be finished.

BBC Radio Shropshire report that Town are close to agreeing a loan for Burnley striker Kian McMahon-Brown, last season’s academy player of the year at Turf Moor. The young forward signed a two-year contract extension with Burnley in the summer, where former Shrewsbury chief executive Matt Williams now serves as chief operating officer.

If that move is completed, Cowan will have added energy in midfield and a highly rated forward option in attack – the sort of calculated gamble that can tilt a League One season.
