Sergio Busquets Returns to Barcelona as Coach

Sergio Busquets is back at Barcelona. This time, with a clipboard instead of a captain’s armband.

The 38-year-old club legend has returned to begin his coaching career with Barça’s reserve side, Barça Athletic, who now find themselves in Spain’s fourth tier, the Segunda Federación. He will work on Juliano Belletti’s staff this season while he completes his coaching badges, stepping into a very different kind of pressure to the one he mastered for over a decade at Camp Nou.

From the summit to the fourth tier

Barça Athletic were in the second division as recently as 2018. Since then, the slide has been brutal: two relegations, a fall into the fourth tier, and a stark reminder that even Barcelona’s famed academy sides are not immune to the grind of league football.

That’s where Belletti and Busquets come in. Their job is double-edged and unforgiving: push the team back into the third tier while still producing players ready for the first team. Results matter. Development matters just as much. There is no hiding place in that balance.

A return to where it all started

For Busquets, it’s a full-circle moment. He joined Barcelona as a teenager in 2005 and made 25 appearances for the reserves before Pep Guardiola pulled him into the senior squad. From there, he became the quiet axis of one of the greatest club sides in history.

He went on to play 722 games for Barça — only Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernández have more. Across those years he stacked up nine LaLiga titles and three Champions League crowns, anchoring midfields that defined an era and reshaped how the game is played.

His influence stretched beyond Catalonia. With Spain, Busquets earned 143 caps and was a central figure in the La Roja team that won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, cementing his place in the golden generation that dominated international football.

Final chapters in Miami, new beginning in Barcelona

When his time at Camp Nou finally ended, Busquets chose a familiar destination with a new twist. In 2023 he joined Inter Miami, reuniting with former Barça teammates and close friends Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Luis Suárez in Florida.

He made 116 appearances for Miami, helping the club lift the Leagues Cup in 2023 and then the MLS Cup in 2025, adding silverware to a league still growing into its own identity. Only after that did he call time on his playing career.

Now he returns to Barcelona not as the metronome in midfield, but as an apprentice on the touchline. The badge is the same. The stakes are different. The objective is clear: rebuild Barça Athletic, shape the next generation, and see whether one of the smartest midfielders of his time can now orchestrate the game from the dugout.
