Scott McTominay Undergoes Heart Surgery After Napoli Diagnosis

Scott McTominay will step away from Napoli duty in the coming days to undergo heart surgery after the club confirmed the midfielder has been diagnosed with a “mild benign arrhythmia”.

The 29-year-old, a cornerstone of Napoli’s midfield since his £25 million move from Manchester United in 2024, is set for a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) and will miss a crucial stretch of fixtures before the international break.

Napoli move quickly to calm fears

Napoli released a detailed medical update on Tuesday, seeking to head off any panic over the Scot’s condition.

“Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days. He will be available again after the international break,” the statement read.

Club doctors have stressed the issue is relatively common among elite athletes and does not pose a threat to McTominay’s long-term career. The procedure is considered routine in football at this level, and Napoli expect him to return to full training once the national-team window has passed.

McTominay’s last outing came in a shock home defeat to Como at the weekend, a result that deepened the sense of unease around Massimiliano Allegri’s early weeks in charge.

Allegri’s early warning signs

Even before the heart condition was made public, Allegri had hinted that his midfield general was not at full tilt.

“McTominay had some problems with blisters, so he’s been training on a limited basis. Hopefully, we can get him into the best possible condition as soon as possible,” the Napoli boss said after the loss to Como.

Domestic assignments against Bologna and Fiorentina follow, both awkward, both capable of punishing a side still searching for consistency.

Napoli insist McTominay will be back on the other side of the international window. If his recovery proceeds as expected, he is being lined up for a return against Frosinone on October 10.
