Scott McTominay will step away from the pitch for a short spell after Napoli revealed the Scotland midfielder requires a minor heart procedure.

The 29-year-old has been diagnosed with what the club described as “a mild benign arrhythmia” and will undergo corrective treatment in the coming days. Napoli stressed the issue is minor and expect McTominay to be back in action after the international break in early October.

The problem came to light during Sunday’s 2-1 Serie A defeat to Como, when McTominay was substituted after 56 minutes. Medical checks followed, and specialists identified the irregular heartbeat.

For Napoli, the timeline is manageable. For Scotland, it is a significant early setback.

The procedure and recovery period mean McTominay is likely to miss Sebastien Pocognoli’s first four matches as Scotland head coach. Those games come thick and fast in the Nations League: a home-and-away double-header against Slovenia, followed by clashes with North Macedonia and Switzerland.

McTominay has been a central figure for Scotland in recent years, often delivering in big moments. Removing that presence from the heart of midfield just as a new regime begins is far from ideal.
