SC Cambuur Fans Injured by Fireworks During Eredivisie Match

SC Cambuur say fans suffered “burns, hearing damage and eye injuries” after Feyenoord supporters hurled fireworks into home sections during Sunday’s league match at the Kooi Stadion.

The game was halted for around 10 minutes in the first half when a mass of red flares lit up the away end and fireworks began to rain down. Some were launched towards areas packed with Cambuur supporters. The club later confirmed five fans had been injured.

What should have been a routine Eredivisie fixture turned ugly in seconds.

In a strongly worded statement, SC Cambuur condemned the scenes, calling the use of fireworks “completely unacceptable” and insisting such behaviour “has no place in a football stadium whatsoever”. The club, promoted back to the Eredivisie last season after three years in the second tier, said it will work with authorities to ensure those responsible are identified and punished.

Feyenoord moved quickly to distance themselves from their own fans’ actions. The Rotterdam club said it “firmly distances itself from the unacceptable events” and confirmed that head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who served as Arne Slot’s assistant at Liverpool last season, personally apologised to SC Cambuur after the final whistle.

The pressure on both clubs now shifts off the pitch. Cambuur want answers. Feyenoord want accountability.

To that end, Feyenoord announced they will request camera footage to help track down the culprits. For the injured supporters and a shaken home crowd, the question lingers: how many more warnings does Dutch football need before this stops?
