Santos' Comeback Victory: Neymar and Gabigol Shine in Copa Sudamericana

Santos walked into a storm at Vila Belmiro and somehow came out with a lead.

They lost two starters to injury before halftime, saw VAR wipe out two goals, fell behind early, and still turned the night around. A 2-1 victory over Macará on Thursday in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 doesn’t tell the whole story. The route to that scoreline was chaotic, tense, and very, very Santos.

And at the heart of it all: Neymar and Gabigol, finally decisive together in a season that has rarely allowed it.

Shock start and early blows

The script ripped itself up after five minutes.

Luan Peres backed off, Willian Arão didn’t clean up the danger, and Franco Posse punished them. Macará were in front, Vila stunned, and Peixe suddenly chasing a tie they were expected to control.

From there, Santos had to steady themselves before they could think about imposing their superior quality. They needed to breathe. To settle. To remember who they were.

Gabigol started to drag them forward. He found pockets, pulled defenders around, and carved out chances that hinted at a response.

VAR steals the spotlight

Santos came out for the second half with purpose and aggression. They looked like a side that had finally found their rhythm.

Santos had been the better side, more dangerous and more insistent, but the margin remained slim. A 2-1 win, nothing more. No cushion, no room for complacency.

Tight margin, high stakes

The tie now travels to Estadio Bellavista next Thursday, with Santos carrying a narrow advantage and the safety net of a draw.

Macará know exactly what they need: a win by two goals to go through in regular time. A single-goal victory, and it’s straight to penalties.

Waiting on the other side are Atlético or Red Bull Bragantino, with Galo holding a 1-0 edge from the first leg in Bragança. The bracket is tightening. The room for error is shrinking.

Before any of that, though, reality bites again.

Peixe return to the Brasileirão as the team currently opening the relegation zone, and on Sunday they visit 18th-placed Vasco at São Januário in a direct fight near the bottom.

Neymar and Gabigol finally tilted a big night in Santos’ favour. The question now is whether this comeback is a turning point in their season, or just a brief escape from the pressure closing in on all sides.
