Rotherham United Sign Former Manchester United Defender Sonny Aljofree

Rotherham United have moved to add Premier League pedigree to their back line, snapping up former Manchester United defender Sonny Aljofree on a two-year deal.

The 22-year-old, comfortable both at centre-back and right-back, joins as a free agent after ending his long association with Old Trafford in the summer. Rotherham also hold an option to extend his stay by a further year, a clear sign they see more than just short-term cover in the defender.

This is not a kid plucked from obscurity. Aljofree was part of the Manchester United side that lifted the FA Youth Cup in the 2021-22 season, a competition that has often served as a springboard for careers at the top level. He never managed to break into the first team, but his education came in different ways.

He has already taken the hard road that many academy prospects avoid. Spells at Altrincham, Accrington Stanley and, most recently, Notts County have exposed him to the realities of senior football: tight pitches, physical forwards, and the need to grow up quickly. Those loans now feed into a move that feels like a natural next step rather than a gamble.

There is also a strong football lineage at play. Sonny is the son of former Plymouth Argyle defender Hasney Aljofree, and the family name will be familiar to fans who remember the lower-league battles of the 2000s. Now it is the younger Aljofree’s turn to carve out his own reputation.

Rotherham supporters have already had a glimpse. The defender has been involved on trial during pre-season, giving the Millers a close look before committing to a contract. They liked what they saw. Enough to tie him down, and to build in the security of that extra-year option.

For a club intent on rebuilding and refreshing its squad, this is the kind of signing that can quietly define a season: a hungry defender with elite schooling, seasoned by the rough edges of loan football, stepping into a division where potential has to turn into presence.
