Romero Joins Atletico Madrid from Spurs in €40m Deal

Atletico have landed one of the most coveted centre-backs in Europe, sealing the signing of Cristian Romero from Tottenham in a deal worth up to €40 million.

The 28-year-old Argentina international has signed a long-term contract running until 30 June 2031, a statement of faith from Los Rojiblancos and a clear indication of how central he is to their plans.

After completing his medical at the Vithas-Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Centre in Madrid, Romero headed to the club’s offices at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano to finalise the move and pose for the traditional signing photos. From London cornerstone to Madrid’s new enforcer

Romero leaves Tottenham after five eventful seasons in north London. Initially arriving on loan for the 2021-22 campaign, he did enough in that first year to convince Spurs to make the deal permanent, and he never looked back.

Across all competitions, the right-footed defender racked up 156 appearances, scoring 13 goals and supplying seven assists – impressive numbers for a centre-back and a reflection of his aggressive, front-foot style.

His defining moment in England came in the 2024-25 season. Romero anchored the backline as Spurs lifted the Europa League, ending a 31-year wait for a European trophy. He didn’t just collect a medal; he dominated the competition. Born in Córdoba, Argentina, Romero’s rise has been relentless. He broke through at Club Atletico Belgrano in 2016, quickly attracting attention from Europe and earning a move to Serie A with Genoa.

Juventus snapped him up in 2019, but his real explosion came on loan spells back at Genoa and then Atalanta. It was in Bergamo, during the 2020-21 season, that he truly announced himself: Serie A’s best defender, a title that carries weight in a league defined by its defenders.

Those performances opened the door to the Premier League and Spurs. Now, after conquering Italy and England, the next chapter lies in Spain.

Serial winner with Argentina

Romero’s club résumé is strong. His international record is even stronger.

With 58 senior caps for Argentina, he has been a constant presence in one of the most successful cycles in the national team’s history. He has never finished below second place at a major international tournament, a remarkable statistic in itself.

On his honours list: the 2022 World Cup, two Copa America titles, the Finalissima, and a runners-up medal from the 2026 World Cup. He has lived almost every possible emotion on the biggest stages and usually walked away with silverware.
