Romelu Lukaku's Impact as Belgium Faces Spain in World Cup Quarterfinal
Romelu Lukaku stays on the bench as Belgium chase Spain in their World Cup quarterfinal, a big name left out of a big occasion — and yet, not a big surprise.
The country’s all-time leading scorer, the man who slammed the door on the United States with that late goal in the Round of 16, will again have to watch the opening act. If he changes this tie, it will be as a closer, not as a headliner.
This has been the pattern all tournament. Lukaku has slipped into a new role: impact substitute. Not because his finishing has deserted him, not because his status in Belgian football has dimmed, but because the staff want him sharp, explosive, and available when legs are heavy and spaces open up. Short, intense bursts instead of long, grinding shifts across a month-long campaign. It is a calculation about risk, fatigue, and the reality of a body that has already carried a heavy club load.
At the same time, Belgium have stumbled upon a different look up front. Charles De Ketelaere, fresh from his two-goal display against the United States, keeps his place in the starting XI against Spain. Form earns faith, and the young forward has it right now. His movement and energy give Belgium a different profile from Lukaku’s power game, and for this stage of the match, that is the bet.
Behind him, the cavalry returns. Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku, both on the bench at kickoff in the Round of 16, are restored to the lineup. De Bruyne’s passing range and Doku’s direct running offer Belgium their best route to unsettling Spain’s rhythm and tilting a tie many expect La Roja to control. They come in fresher, less burdened by minutes, primed to chase an upset.
All of that still leaves one looming presence in reserve. Lukaku may not be on the pitch when the whistle blows, but his shadow hangs over the night. As the game stretches, as defenders tire and the box becomes a battleground, there is little doubt Belgium will turn to their record scorer.
The only question is whether he will be asked to rescue a lost cause, or to deliver the final touch on a famous win.
