Rodri Joins Barcelona in £65m Transfer from Manchester City

Barcelona have landed one of the most influential midfielders in world football, confirming the signing of Rodri from Manchester City in a deal worth around £65m.

The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner has agreed a four-year contract at the Nou Camp, taking him back to La Liga and to Spanish football for the first time since leaving Atletico Madrid in 2019.

A colossal era ends at City

Rodri, now 30, walks away from Manchester after seven seasons that reshaped both club and player.

He made 298 appearances for City and stacked up 12 major trophies: four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups and, crowning it all, the Champions League in 2023. He became the metronome of Pep Guardiola’s side, the safety net and the starting point for almost everything.

The last two seasons, though, tested him. Injuries disrupted his rhythm and limited his influence just as City chased yet more history. Any doubts over his level vanished this summer. Rodri roared back at the World Cup, driving Spain through the tournament and leaving with the player of the tournament award as La Roja lifted the trophy for the second time.

His farewell to City supporters carried the weight of those years.

"I am leaving the club with a huge sense of pride about what we have achieved and gratitude too for so many amazing memories.

"What we have done together in these years is something both very special and unforgettable.

"City didn't just make me grow as a player. They made me grow as a human. I saw my brother graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University. I could see my girlfriend working for the NHS. Manchester shaped my whole life."

Contract clock, Madrid interest, Barcelona’s move

The timing of the deal mattered. Rodri had entered the final 12 months of the contract he signed in 2022. City wanted him to stay and pushed for an extension, but talks stalled and never produced an agreement.

Sensing an opening, Europe’s giants circled. Real Madrid initially looked the most likely destination. The move would have been controversial for a former Atletico midfielder, yet Rodri did not dismiss the idea when asked about it on Spanish radio in March.

"There are more players who have taken that path. Not directly, but over time. You can't turn down the best clubs in the world," he said.

At that stage, the Bernabeu seemed a realistic next step. Then the picture changed. Real Madrid ended their interest, clearing the path for Barcelona.

Behind the scenes, sources told BBC Sport that Barcelona already had Rodri’s approval to start talks with City. Their first offer, at £38.5m, fell well short and was swiftly rejected. The Catalan club came back with a far stronger proposal, and the two sides eventually settled on a fee well above that opening bid.

The pressure finally told. City agreed to sell a player who had defined their midfield for a generation, while Barcelona secured the deep-lying anchor they have craved.

A dream return to Spain

On Monday, Rodri flew into Barcelona, the move all but complete. At the airport, he summed up the moment with one word: a "dream".

For Barcelona, it is more than a marquee signing. It is a statement that they still intend to build their future around elite, peak-age talent in the most demanding area of the pitch.

For City, it closes a remarkable chapter. For Rodri, it opens another: can he now become the heartbeat of a new Barcelona era, just as he once was in Manchester?
