Robbie Keane Steps Down as Ferencváros Head Coach
Robbie Keane has stepped down as head coach of Ferencváros, bringing a sudden halt to an 18-month spell that has rapidly burnished his reputation on the touchline.
The 45-year-old leaves Budapest with his stock high. He delivered a Hungarian Cup this season and pushed Ferencváros to second place in the league, backing up last season’s league title and underlining his ability to turn a big club’s expectation into silverware.
Keane did more than collect trophies. He shifted the club’s profile. Under his watch, Ferencváros blended results with renewal, with the Irishman praised for giving genuine opportunities to younger players. Among them was Hungary international midfielder Alex Toth, whose emergence under Keane helped pave the way for a move to Bournemouth.
This was not his first successful stop on the managerial circuit. Before Hungary, Keane claimed an Israeli league title with Maccabi Tel Aviv during his year in charge there, a campaign that hinted he was more than just a famous name trying his hand at coaching.
Now the Republic of Ireland’s all-time record goalscorer stands at another crossroads. He is currently favourite to become the next manager of Scottish champions Celtic, a club that already knows his finishing touch. Keane scored 12 goals in just 16 games during a prolific loan spell in Glasgow in 2010, a short stint that left a lasting impression on supporters.
From Budapest to Tel Aviv and possibly back to Glasgow, Keane’s managerial journey is gathering pace. The question now is whether Celtic will hand him the next stage of his career – and whether he can turn that familiar roar at Celtic Park into the backdrop for his biggest challenge yet.
