Bruno Guimaraes pushes for Arsenal move amid Newcastle's £100m stance
Bruno Guimaraes has moved his Arsenal plan into overdrive.
With Brazil’s shock World Cup exit to Norway cutting his summer short, the Newcastle United midfielder has wasted no time. His representatives have accelerated talks with Arsenal, with the clear aim of sorting a move before he is due back for pre-season on Tyneside.
Those close to the situation say Guimaraes would ideally prefer not to return to Newcastle training at all if an agreement can be struck in time. The intention is clear: this is the window he wants his next step.
Newcastle, though, are not playing along easily.
The club have dismissed any suggestion they would entertain offers in the region of £60million. Internally, that figure has been knocked back in no uncertain terms. Well-placed sources insist it will take a package close to £100million before the hierarchy even begin to seriously consider signing off on his departure.
For a player they regard as one of the best midfielders on the planet, they believe that valuation simply reflects his standing and the current market. They also know exactly what they would be losing: the heartbeat of Eddie Howe’s side and a symbol of their recent resurgence.
Arsenal at the front of the queue
Brazil’s early elimination has brought everything forward. Talks that were pencilled in for later this month have been dragged into the present. Guimaraes’ camp have moved quickly.
Fresh conversations have taken place with Arsenal, where the message from the player has not changed. He wants to join Mikel Arteta’s side. TEAMtalk previously revealed that Guimaraes informed Arsenal last month of his desire to move to the Emirates; that stance has now been reinforced in the wake of Brazil’s exit.
Manchester City remain in the frame and have held positive discussions over a potential deal, but Arsenal are currently viewed as leading the race.
Inside the Emirates, sporting director Andrea Berta is juggling several high-profile pursuits. Arsenal are pushing for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and maintaining interest in Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis. Even so, central midfield has always sat near the top of the summer agenda.
They already have Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Martin Odegaard and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Yet the feeling is that another elite operator in the middle of the pitch is essential if Arsenal are to sustain a challenge across every competition.
With Christian Norgaard expected to depart, Guimaraes has emerged as the priority target to elevate that department again.
‘The right moment’ for a new challenge
Behind the scenes, there is a clear sense from Guimaraes’ camp that this is the decisive juncture in his career.
A source close to the situation, speaking to TEAMtalk on condition of anonymity, outlined the midfielder’s mindset. Guimaraes, they explained, does not want to waste what could be the best years of his career. He does not see this as abandoning Newcastle, having “given absolutely everything to the club,” but believes that, as one of the world’s finest midfielders, he should now be playing European football.
He accepts that any move hinges entirely on the right offer arriving. That threshold has not been met yet. Even so, his hope is that the situation is resolved this month rather than allowed to drag on.
There is a shared desire on both sides to avoid a repeat of the protracted Alexander Isak saga. Guimaraes still loves Newcastle, the source stressed, and always will, but he feels this is the right moment to seek a new challenge and wants that to be understood on Tyneside.
For now, Arsenal remain at the front of the queue. Newcastle remain entrenched in their valuation. Between those two positions lies a sizeable gap in numbers and a transfer that has the potential to reshape the ambitions of both clubs.
Whether anyone is willing to go close to £100million will decide if this is the summer Guimaraes walks through the doors at London Colney – or walks back into pre-season at Newcastle with unfinished business and an unsettled future.
