Rio Ngumoha's Bayern Move Falls Through

Rio Ngumoha’s summer looked set to detour through Bavaria. Instead, it has snapped back towards Anfield in dramatic fashion.

The 17-year-old Liverpool winger, one of the few bright sparks in a bleak 2025/26 season for the club, was on the brink of a move to Bayern Munich, with reports in Germany claiming a “full verbal agreement” had been reached between the player’s camp and the Bundesliga giants. Now that deal has collapsed.

From secret target to stalled transfer

Bayern’s interest in Ngumoha did not come out of nowhere. Vincent Kompany’s side have been scouring the market for a left-sided winger to compete with Luis Díaz after missing out on Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona in a £69m move.

With their primary target gone, Bayern turned to Ngumoha. David Ornstein revealed that the German club were exploring a move for the teenager, making him their leading option for the left flank. Ngumoha, aware of their pursuit, quickly became central to their plans.

Liverpool’s stance, though, was clear. According to Ornstein, the club insisted he was not for sale and that they intended to strengthen their attack, not weaken it.

Even so, the story did not end there.

German reporter Florian Plettenberg later disclosed that Bayern had gone much further than initial talks. Ngumoha, described as a “secret candidate” they had been working on for weeks, had reached a full verbal agreement with the club and his representatives on Tuesday, 26 May. Kompany had personally approved the move after speaking with the player.

For Bayern, Ngumoha was not a luxury signing. He was an “absolute priority” as backup to Díaz, running alongside their efforts to land Gordon before the Englishman chose Barcelona.

Then the move hit the wall.

Plettenberg reported that the deal “collapsed” on Thursday, at least for now. No club-to-club agreement had been reached, and Liverpool’s firm position appears to have held. Bayern, meanwhile, are left to consider other options, with attention also turning to targets such as Brown and Saibari.

Liverpool’s gem back in the spotlight

For Liverpool, this saga only underlines how highly Ngumoha is rated inside the club. Signed from Chelsea as a standout youth prospect, he broke through last season and offered rare energy and invention in a side that often looked flat.

There is a belief at Anfield that he could “explode” next season, saving the club significant money in the transfer market if his development continues on its current trajectory. Discussions over a new contract have already been floated, reflecting his rising importance.

Under former head coach Arne Slot, Ngumoha’s minutes never quite matched his promise. Supporters felt he deserved more chances. That frustration now meets a fresh wave of optimism with Andoni Iraola’s arrival.

Iraola is expected to bring a more aggressive, front-foot style, one that should suit a fearless, direct winger like Ngumoha. For a 17-year-old who has already shown he can handle the Premier League stage, the opportunity is obvious: stay, grow, and become a central figure in Liverpool’s rebuild.

Bayern’s loss, Liverpool’s test

Bayern’s move, its rapid progress and equally swift collapse, sends a clear message. Europe’s elite are watching Ngumoha closely. Kompany did not push for a teenager as a token squad piece; he wanted him as a key part of his attacking rotation.

Liverpool have won this battle. They kept their line, resisted a heavyweight suitor, and retained one of their most exciting young players.

Now comes the harder part: turning that show of faith into a pathway.

If Ngumoha gets the platform many inside the club expect under Iraola, this collapsed agreement with Bayern may come to be seen not as a missed opportunity for the player, but as the moment Liverpool drew a line in the sand over the future of their new generation.
